In one embodiment, a neurostimulation lead for stimulating neural tissue of a patient, comprises: a lead body of insulative material; a plurality of electrodes; a plurality of terminals; a plurality of conductors, wherein the plurality of electrodes are electrically coupled to the plurality of terminals through the plurality of conductors; wherein the plurality of conductors are disposed in a helical manner in a repeating pattern of groups of conductors separated by gaps along a substantial length of the lead body, each gap being larger than an inter-conductor pitch within the groups of conductors; wherein the insulative material is a compliant material permitting elongation of the lead at low stretching forces and the insulative material of the lead body is fused through a substantial volume of the lead body and along a substantial length of the lead body.

Compliant electrical stimulation leads and methods of fabrication

In one embodiment, a method of fabrication an implantable lead for providing electrical pulses to tissue of a patient, the method comprises: (i) providing a sheath of transparent insulative material, wherein the sheath comprises a plurality of lumens; (ii) scanning across the sheath with a confocal displacement meter to generate displacement data; (iii) processing the displacement data, in software executed on a computer system, to generate a representation of an exterior surface and lumens of the sheath; (iv) automatically selecting locations, in software executed on a computer system, on the exterior surface of application of laser pulses to create apertures in the sheath that provide access to respective lumens of the sheath; and (v) applying laser pulses according to the sheath to create the apertures.

Method for fabricating an implantable lead for applying electrical pulses to tissue of a patient and system for fabrication thereof

An implantable pulse generator (IPG) is fabricated by utilizing a lead body with a plurality of conductors enclosed in insulative material along a first length of the conductors, and a second length of the conductors being exposed. A tubular structure is placed over the lead body with the plurality of conductors extending through it. A feedthrough assembly includes a plurality of feedthrough pins surrounded by insular material with a ferrule extending about an outer surface of the feedthrough assembly. The plurality of conductors are attached to the plurality of feedthrough pins and the ferrule of the feedthrough assembly is welded to the tubular structure to form an intermediate assembly. The intermediate assembly is then welded to one or more housing components of the IPG providing a hermetically seal. A connector portion on a distal end of the lead body is provided to electrically connect to terminals of a stimulation lead.

Method of fabricating implantable pulse generator using wire connections to feedthrough structures and implantable pulse generators

In one embodiment, a method of fabrication of a stimulation lead for electrical stimulation of tissue of a patient, the method comprises: providing a substrate of non-conductive material for a stimulation portion of the stimulation lead; processing the substrate to create a plurality of recessed features into a surface of the substrate, wherein the plurality of recessed features comprise a plurality of paths for electrical traces and a plurality of surfaces for electrodes with each of the surfaces being connected to one of the traces; providing first conductive material over the surface of the substrate; subjecting the surface of the substrate to mechanical processing to remove conductive material from portions of the substrate disposed above the plurality of recessed features, wherein each respective connected electrode and trace is electrically isolated from the other electrodes and traces after the mechanical processing; electrically plating second conductive material over the first conductive material; providing insulative material over the plurality of electrical traces; and electrically connecting conductive material of electrical traces with conductor wires of a lead body.

Method of fabricating stimulation lead for applying electrical stimulation to tissue of a patient

In one embodiment, a method of fabrication of a stimulation lead comprising a plurality of segmented electrodes for stimulation of tissue of a patient, the method comprises: providing an elongated, substantially cylindrical substrate, the substrate comprising a plurality of recesses defined in an outer surface of the substrate; coating the substrate with conductive material; patterning conductive material on the substrate to form a plurality of electrode surfaces for at least the plurality of segmented electrodes and a plurality of traces connected to the plurality of electrode surfaces, wherein each electrode surface and its corresponding trace are defined in the recesses on the outer surface of the substrate and are electrically isolated from other electrode surfaces and traces; providing insulative material over at least the plurality of traces; and electrically coupling the plurality of traces to conductive wires of a lead body.

Method of fabricating a stimulation lead

Fabricating an implantable stimulation lead by advancing work material to be wrapped with wire conductors, then, operating a plurality of payout carriers to let out the wire conductors, rotating the plurality of payout carriers to wrap the wire conductors about the work material, providing an amount of twist to each wire conductor as the wire conductors are let out, forming a lead body using the wrapped conductors, and fabricating a plurality terminals on the lead body, wherein the plurality of terminals are electrically connected to the conductive wires.

Method for producing a multielectrode lead

In one embodiment, a method of fabricating an implantable pulse generator, comprises: providing a lead body including a plurality of conductors; providing a feedthrough component comprising a plurality of feedthrough pins; hermetically enclosing pulse generating circuitry and switching circuitry within a housing, the feedthrough component being welded to the housing; laser machining each of the plurality of feedthrough pins to comprise a slot along a surface of the respective feedthrough pin; placing a respective conductor from the lead body in the respective slot of each of the plurality of feedthrough pins; and performing welding operations to connect the plurality of conductors of the lead body with the plurality of feedthrough pins of the feedthrough component.

Methods of fabrication of a simulation lead

A wire wrapping device that includes a turntable assembly that is made up of a turntable and a driver adapted to rotate the turntable. Also, a set of payout carriers are mounted on the turntable, each payout carrier adapted to let out wire to be wrapped. A driver is adapted to turn each payout carrier relative to the turn table, the driver being user adjustable to turn each payout carrier by a selectable amount, per each complete rotation of the turntable.

In one embodiment, a method of manufacturing a biological electrical stimulus cable assembly, comprises: providing a cable portion including a plurality of first conductive wires; removing a first portion of the insulative material from a surface along the length of the insulative material at a first location to expose only one of the first conductive wires; electrically connecting a second conductive wire to the first exposed wire surface; wrapping the second conductive wire about the cable portion a plurality of times around the cable portion such that the second conductive wire forms a substantially continuous band; electrically connecting a second end of the second conductive wire to a conductive surface; and providing an electrode over the band formed by the second conductive wire, wherein the band formed by the second conductive wire extends along at least a majority of the length of the electrode.

Implantable cable having securely attached ring contacts and methods of manufacturing the same

A method of manufacturing a biological electrical stimulus cable. The method begins with a cable portion having a plurality of first conductive wires set into a length of insulative material. A portion of the insulative material is removed from the surface creating an exposed first wire surface. Then, a second conductive wire is connected to the exposed first wire surface and a preformed conductive ring is threaded onto the cable portion and electrically connected to the second conductive wire.

Implantable cable having securely attached ring contacts and method of manufacturing the same

A bio-probe having a base and a tip, and comprising a longitudinal core of substantially rigid material. On the core, there is a first layer of dielectric material, supported by and substantially circumferentially surrounding the core. Also, a set of conductors, each conductor extending longitudinally along the first layer of dielectric material and a second layer of dielectric material, substantially covering each of the set of conductors. For each of the conductors, an aperture is defined through the second layer of dielectric material to the conductor, thereby defining an electrode. In one preferred embodiment of this aspect, the first layer of insulative material is in the form of a tube and wherein the core is removable from the tube.

Multi-channel flexible bio-probe and method of making the same

A method of addressing a condition of a living body comprising the steps of using an energy beam to form a set of pores in a work piece biocompatible membrane. The pores should have a mean area of less than 500 &#x3bc;m through the biocompatible membrane, thereby producing a microporous membrane adapted to facilitate tissue in growth. This membrane is placed at least partially about an article that is adapted to be implanted in a living body, which is implanted into the living body, thereby addressing the condition.
