A movable-vehicle security system includes a facial-recognition system including a scanner such as a television or infrared camera directed at the face of a person in the driver's seat, which system produces output control signals that are applied to enable or disable operation of the vehicle, with or without a key or other supplemental security system. In a particular embodiment, the system includes a camera mounted on the 'third taillight' assembly (which is preferably mounted below the roof and inside the rear window), directed at the rear-view mirror, and coupled to a facial-recognition computer, which in turn is coupled (with appropriate security precautions) to an enabling element for the vehicle, such as a starter motor. In a further embodiment, the system can be coupled to various elements of the motive system to create an auto-starting car.

Facial-recognition vehicle security system

A machine tool apparatus is provided employing a plurality of tool heads which may be sequentially or simultaneously automatically controlled to perform preprogrammed operations on either the same or different workpieces. In one form, a plurality of tool heads are supported on the same frame, guideway or track and may be separate prepositioned or driven under remote or automatic control to perform preprogrammed operations either in sequence or simultaneously on the same workpiece or simultaneously on separate workpieces spaced apart on a common conveyor such as a flight conveyor while the conveyor is either in motion or stationary. In another form, the conveyor is automatically stopped with units of work thereon, each disposed so as to be predeterminately located with respect to a respective machine tool which has been prepositioned adjacent the work-holding conveyor. In yet another form, at least certain of the machine tools are movable parallel to the work-holding conveyor so that they may be predeterminately moved prior to and/or during operations on work. In yet another form, means are provided for transferring units of work from the work-holding conveyor to temporary platforms adjacent certain of the respective machine tools so that each tool may perform automatic operations on work while the work-holding conveyor remains operating.

Machine tool method

A bar code () has primary information () encoded in one direction (e.g., horizontally) and secondary information () encoded in another direction (e.g., vertically) in single () or multiple tracks () in selected ones of the vertical bars () of a bar code (). Using a non-linear, variable amplitude scanner, all of the bars are scanned in the one direction to obtain all of the primary information and all of those vertical bars having secondary information are scanned in the other direction to obtain all of the secondary information. The one direction which is perpendicular to the vertical bars (), is determined by first rotating the scan path axis () until both start () and end () code bars are read thereby placing the scan path entirely within the total bar code, and, then, further rotating the scan path () to determine the direction of the minimum crossing width (Lsc) of the total bar code (). Secondary information is scanned in planes orthogonal to the one direction after those vertical bars () having such information are first identified and selected. In a preferred embodiment, the decoded secondary information may be used to control selected station process operations for selected products in a continuous manufacturing assembly line.

Method and apparatus for encoding and decoding bar codes with primary and secondary information and method of using such bar codes

An apparatus and method for producing elongated strip, wire or cable, a portion or all of which is defined by electrically superconducting material. An elongated wire, strip or cable is controllably coated with one or more materials which define a superconducting layer thereon or a plurality of such superconducting layers which bond or solidify on the substrate. In a particular form, the superconductor is formed as a layer secured to a wire-like substrate having an outer stratum that is electrically insulative, and a second layer of insulating material is secured to the outer surface of the superconductor layer. In one embodiment, the substrate may be an optically transparent light pipe, such as made of glass.

Superconducting electrical cable

Systems and methods are disclosed for displaying data on a head's-up display screen. Multiple forms of data can be selectively displayed on a semi-transparent screen mounted in the user's normal field of view. The screen can either be mounted on the user's head, or mounted on a moveable implement and positioned in front of the user. A user interface is displayed on the screen including a moveable cursor and a menu of computer control icons. An eye-tracking system is mounted proximate the user and is employed to control movement of the cursor. By moving and focusing his or her eyes on a specific icon, the user controls the cursor to move to select the icon. When an icon is selected, a command computer is controlled to acquire and display data on the screen. The data is typically superimposed over the user's normal field of view.

An audio photograph or picture made of a photograph or picture material having an image area for providing at least one photographic or picture image and further having an audio system embedded within the photograph or picture material . The audio system comprises a recording system for recording and storing audio information and a playback system for playing audio information. The components of the audio system are made from ultra-thin, compact, and flexible materials, and these components are made paper-thin. The audio system further comprises a power source, a micro-controller for controlling recording and playing of audio information wherein the micro-controller is coupled to the power source , a storage memory coupled to the micro-controller for storing the audio information, a recording system coupled to the micro-controller for picking up and storing the audio information in the storage memory , and a playback system coupled to the micro-controller for playing the audio information stored in the storage memory . The embedded audio system is able to receivingly couple to an audio device for transferring the audio information between the audio device and the storage memory of the audio system

A system and method for generating and displaying three-dimensional images of a scene on a screen that provides multiple viewing positions for one or more viewers . A stereoscopic video capture system and picks up video images and of the scene . A video signal processing unit processes the video images into video signals. The video signal processing unit has a graphics controller for controlling and processing the video signals into stereoscopic display signals. A display unit displays the stereoscopic display signals as stereoscopic display images on the screen , and the graphics controller manipulates the stereoscopic display images to provide multiple viewing positions of the stereoscopic display signals on the display unit of the screen to the one or more viewers . Multiple viewing angles and distances are provided for the one or more viewers . The stereoscopic display images are oscillated to provide multiple viewing angles. The stereoscopic display images comprise vertical image pair strips and and dark vertical strips interposed between the vertical image pair strips and . These strips and and strips are alternately interchanged in position for oscillating the stereoscopic display images, typically above a critical fusion frequency for human vision, to provide multiple viewing angles. The vertical image pair strips and are varied in width to provide multiple viewing distances. A control unit, such as a remote unit or or attached unit, is used for adjusting the multiple viewing positions of the stereoscopic display images on the screen for the one or more viewers

Flexible manufacturing systems and methods

A fuzzy logic based emergency flight control system for an aircraft. The system has a thrust vectoring flight control system, an aerodynamic flight control system, and a fuzzy logic controller. The thrust vectoring flight control system provides thrust to the aircraft in an emergency situation alone or in combination with aerodynamic flight controls. The fuzzy logic controller executes fuzzy logic algorithms for assessing the emergency situation and controlling the aircraft thrust vectoring and aerodynamic flight control systems in the emergency situation. An adjustable nozzle is coupled to an exhaust thrust end of an engine of the aircraft and is angularly adjusted to direct thrust of the aircraft in a determined direction after fuzzy logic controller assessment of the emergency situation. Alternatively, an adjustable panel is mounted to a wing of the aircraft and positionable near an exhaust thrust end of an engine of the aircraft to direct thrust of the aircraft in a determined direction after the fuzzy logic controller assessment of the emergency situation. The fuzzy logic controller further includes a position, attitude, and heading determination system for determining position, attitude, and heading of the aircraft. The position, attitude, and heading determination system further includes global positioning system receivers mounted at extremities of the aircraft and a determination processor coupled to the global positioning receivers for calculating and assessing position, attitude, and heading of the aircraft.

Fuzzy logic based emergency flight control with thrust vectoring capability

A system and method for controlling traffic and traffic lights and selectively distributing warning messages to motorists includes a controller to determine appropriate action based on traffic congestion parameters. Fuzzy logic is used to determine optimum traffic light phase split based on the traffic information from the traffic information units. Global Positioning System technology is used by the system and method in order to track moving vehicles and signs and be able to communicate with them.

Intelligent traffic control and warning system and method

The present invention concerns a novel drug delivery unit. The drug delivery unit comprises a medical material and a quantity of gel. Also provided is a permeable membrane. The permeable membrane surrounds the gel. In addition, the present invention also includes an electrical transmission mechanism. The electrical transmission mechanism is operably coupled to the gel to cause the gel to controllably change in shape in response to a voltage applied to the electrical transmission mechanism.

Medical devices using electrosensitive gels

Surveillance platforms detect dangers and transmit information signals describing the dangers to a control center, which determines the degree of danger and its geographic extent. The center generates a message that identifies the degree of danger and GPS coordinates of the impacted geographic area for a region. A vulnerability index determined using neural networks and fuzzy logic enables a prioritized message. The center broadcasts the message to remotely located warning devices, which compare the received danger coordinates with their own GPS coordinates and determine the extent to which they are in danger. Warning signals can issue automatically, appropriate to the degree of danger. Emergency manned vehicles may also directly receive the broadcast message and act appropriately relative to the degree of danger.
