A customer replaceable unit installable in a printing apparatus comprises a component requiring high voltage electric power for operation, a low voltage power input, and that cooperates with the low voltage power input in order to transform low voltage electric power from the low voltage power input into high voltage electric power for use by the component. The customer replaceable unit may also include a low voltage signal input, and the high voltage power supply unit controls output of the high voltage electric power in response to signals received at the low voltage signal input. The signals received at the low voltage signal input are independent of a type of the component in the customer replaceable unit, and the high voltage power supply unit provides an appropriate high voltage for the type of the component, thereby allowing modification of the type of component without having to provide a different low voltage signal.

An intelligent communicating supply storage unit is provided, tailored to storing one or more replaceable components for one or more supply-consuming devices. The storage unit may provide capabilities: (a) to sense a presence or absence of replaceable components for associated devices, which may include determining that the correct components are available, and to monitor a status of an internal characteristic of a stored replaceable component by accessing information stored on an externally readable component monitoring module attached to the stored replaceable component; (b) to maintain an updated inventory of the status of supplies on hand to include introduction of supplies into the storage unit for storage, and removal of supplies from the storage unit for use of disposal; and/or (c) to communicate storage unit supply status or inventory from the storage unit to an external source such as, for example, a supply providing organization.

Systems and methods for intelligent communicating storage of condition monitorable replaceable components

Systems and methods for monitoring a replaceable component of a device may include a monitor located on the replacement component. The monitor may include a controller, a memory, and a first communicator that communicates with a second communicator in the device. The monitor may further include a sensor on the monitor that is capable of sensing at least one property of the replaceable component and/or the contents of the replaceable component. The monitor may include a parasitic power generator.

Systems and methods for monitoring replaceable units

Disclosed are marking materials containing retroreflective fillers and processes for the use thereof. In one embodiment, images containing retroreflective fillers are generated on paper by any suitable means, such as electrostatic imaging and development with either dry or liquid developers, ink jet printing, strip-out development processes, or the like, and the images thus generated are used to control a document reproduction system. In another embodiment, images containing retroreflective fillers are generated on a movable part in an imaging apparatus, such as an imaging member, an intermediate transfer member, or the like, by any suitable means, and the images thus generated are used to impart information regarding the relative position of the movable part with respect to the copier or printer containing the movable part.

A hybrid development system for developing composite tri-level xerographic latent images in which conductive magnetic brush (CMB) development system is employed at the first development station and insulative magnetic brush (IMB) development system is used at the second station. In order to preclude spurious fringe field development by the IMB development system at the second development station the conductivity of the IMB developer is in the order of 10.sup.-13 to 10.sup.-15 ohm-cm. Additionally, a scorotron corona charging device located between the two development housings may be used to charge the image developed at the first station to the same potential as the background (white level) thereby eliminating spurious fringe field development by the IMB developer with a conductivity less than 10.sup.-13 ohm-cm at the second development station.

In a tri-level imaging apparatus, a development control arrangement wherein the white discharge level is stabilized at a predetermined voltage and the bias voltages for the developer housings for charged area and discharged area development are independently adjustable for maintaining image background levels within acceptable limits. The white discharge level can be shifted to preferentially enhance the copy quality of one or the other of the charged area or discharged area images.

Stabilization of the white or background discharge voltage level of tri-level images is accomplished by monitoring photoreceptor white discharge level in the inter-document area of the photoreceptor using an electrostatic voltmeter. The information obtained thereby is utilized to control the output of a raster output scanner so as to maintain the white discharge level at a predetermined level.

A magnetic brush developer apparatus including a plurality of developer housings each including a plurality of magnetic brush rolls associated therewith. Conductive magnetic brush (CMB) developer is provided in each of the developer housings. The CMB developer is used to develop electronically formed images. The physical properties such as conductivity, toner concentration and toner charge level of the CMB developers are such that density fine lines are satisfactorily developed notwithstanding the presence of relatively high cleaning fields.

Undesirable transient development conditions that occur during start-up and shut-down in a tri-level xerographic system when the developer biases are either actuated or de-actuated are obviated by the provision of developer apparatuses having rolls which are adapted to be rotated in a predetermined direction for preventing developer contact with the imaging surface during periods of start-up and shut-down. The developer rolls of a selected developer housing or housings can be rotated in a the contact-preventing direction to permit use of the tri-level system to be utilized as a single color system or for the purpose of agitating developer in only one of the housings at time to insure internal triboelectric equilibrium of the developer in that housing.

Undesirable transient development conditions that occur during start-up and shut-down in a tri-level xerographic systemw when the developer biases are either actuated or de-actuated are obviated by using a control strategy that relies on the exposure system to generate a spatial voltage ramp on the photoreceptor during machine start-up and shut-down. Furthermore, the development systems' bias supplies are programmed so that their bias voltages follow the photoreceptor voltage ramp at some predetermined offset voltage. This offset is chosen so that the cleaning field between any development roll and the photoreceptor is always within reasonable limits. As an alternative to synchronizing the exposure and developing characteristics, the charging of the photoreceptor can be varied in accordance with the change of developer bias voltage.

Ramped developer biases

A full-frame flash illumination and imaging system wherein an illumination mechanism compensates for unwanted charge variations on a photoreceptor belt caused by reflections of the lens from the document platen. The area of the belt upon which the negative lens image is formed is predetermined and a controlled quantity of light is directed towards this area, either before, after, or during exposure, to reduce the charge level of the area, to the degree necessary to compensate for the negative lens image. Several illumination mechanisms are disclosed including a programmable LED array and various mask configurations.
