A disclosed example method includes selecting a panelist household, the panelist household subscribing to at least one broadband service delivered via a modem, and identifying an Internet protocol (IP) address assigned to the modem by an Internet service provider (ISP). The example method also includes retrieving a range of IP addresses associated with the ISP, selecting a random subset of IP addresses from the range of IP addresses, and testing each of the IP addresses from the random subset to determine an activity status of each IP address.

An example method includes querying a plurality of VoIP carrier servers to determine the VoIP carrier server that owns the telephone subscriber number (SN), in response to the querying, receiving a plurality of messages operable to determine whether the telephone SN is found within any one of the plurality of VoIP carrier servers, when the received plurality of messages is at least one of inconclusive or when the telephone SN is not found within any one of the plurality of VoIP carrier servers, placing a first partial call to the telephone SN from a first VoIP number within a first VoIP carrier network, receiving a first signal from the first VoIP carrier network, and based on the first received signal, determining whether the telephone SN belongs to the first VoIP carrier network.

Methods and apparatus to measure market share for voice over internet protocol carriers

A method for collecting data to measure market-share for a defined telecommunication market. A market of interest is defined and a random panel of numbers is created. A call set-up is initiated to the created random panels by generating signaling messages wherein the signaling messages access a Calling Name Services (CNAM) database, a Local Number Portability (LNP) database, an E-911 Automated Location Information (ALI) database and a Line Information Database (LIDB) using signaling system 7 (SS7) protocol. Generated signaling messages access ENUM (Telephone Number Mapping) database and Internet Protocol (IP) Peering database using IP. The response to the generated signaling messages are used to determine assignment status, business ownership, businesses versus residential status and the technology employed for a given number in the created panel. In one embodiment, the process is repeated over a period in order to determine changes to the market-share and derivative metrics for the telecommunication market.

Methods and apparatus to measure market share for voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) carriers is disclosed. A method of measuring wireless telecommunication market information for wireless devices. The method includes selecting a panel of numbers, generating signaling messages for the selected panel, sending the generated signaling messages, receiving a response from plurality of databases and processing the received response to determine market information. In one embodiment, the response is an electronic serial number (ESN) of a wireless device. Processing the ESN may determine the manufacturer of the wireless device, the model of the wireless device and its corresponding serial number. As such; the market-share of manufacturer of the device, its corresponding market-share for a given model, and the number of unsold wireless devices may be determined. Tracking the selected panel of numbers may determine the lifespan of a device and the relationship between providers and replacing or acquiring devices. It is appreciated that identifiers other than ESN may be used (e.g., IMEI in GSM technology).
