Shoulder and tread for a tire

A pneumatic tire, which may be used as a control tire for calibrating tire testing equipment, comprises a pair of annular beads (,), at least one carcass ply (,) wrapped around the beads, belt reinforcement (,) disposed over the at least one carcass ply in a crown area of the tire, a tread (,) disposed over the belt reinforcement, and sidewalls (,) disposed between the tread (,) and the beads (,), The tire is made with a tread (,) having no grooves or sipes, and which comprises a radial medium truck tire retreading compound. The belt reinforcement (,) is laid up in the circumference of the tire with a low angle, i.e. less than 0.75&deg; with respect to the EP of the tire in the second belt (,), and less than 0.5&deg; with respect to the EP of the tire in the first belt (,).

Tire tread

A high performance, radial tire having a tread, the tread has an intermediate groove between first and second lateral edges, circumferential grooves between the first lateral edge and the intermediate groove, and a circumferential groove or grooves between the second lateral edge and the intermediate groove. Each groove has a first and second wall wherein the first wall of each groove is on the side of the groove nearest to the first lateral edge and the second wall being on the opposite side of the groove, the respective first and second groove walls having an angular orientation .theta..sub.1, .theta..sub.2 relative to a line perpendicular to a tangent to the tread surface curvature as approximately defined at the center of the groove wherein .theta..sub.1, is the angular orientation of the first wall and .theta..sub.2 is the angular orientation of the second wall, the angular orientation .theta..sub.1 is greater than the angular orientation .theta..sub.2 for each groove between the first lateral edge and the intermediate groove, the angular orientation .theta..sub.2 is equal to or greater than the angular orientation .theta. .sub.1 at the intermediate groove and at the circumferential groove or grooves between the second lateral edge and the intermediate groove, the angular orientation .theta..sub.1 of the first walls and the angular orientation .theta..sub.2 of the second walls of the circumferential grooves forming an included angle of less than 30.degree. as measured between intersecting lines tangent to and extending generally radially inwardly along the first and second groove walls.

High performance radial tire

The tread reinforcing belt structure (24) of a pneumatic tire (10) has at least one belt ply (29) of flat steel wire. The belt ply of flat steel wire is stiffened by other components of the tread reinforcing structure such as belt plies of steel cables (28,30). It is especially important that the axially outermost edge portions of the belt ply of flat steel wires be supported by other components of the tread reinforcing belt structure, and that the flat wire have specific cross-sectional dimensions.
