Subject matter disclosed herein relates to improving a contact diameter of an adhesive/sealing material on surfaces of substrates by altering rheological properties of the adhesive/sealing material. An electrowetting display device comprises a first substrate and a second substrate, a first fluid and a second fluid disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, wherein the first fluid is immiscible with the second fluid. An adhesive/sealing material comprising UV curable epoxy glue is in contact with the second fluid and couples the second substrate to the first substrate. The adhesive/sealing material further comprises silica particles in a range of 1-6% mass fraction of silica that alter rheological properties of the UV curable epoxy glue.

Adhesive/sealing material for an electrowetting device

A display device includes a first support plate and a second support plate. A pixel region between the first support plate and the second support plate includes a plurality of pixel wall portions over the first support plate forming a perimeter of the pixel region. A first liquid and a second liquid that is immiscible with the first liquid are disposed in the pixel region. A light-blocking portion is disposed on an inner surface of the second support plate and over a first pixel wall portion of the plurality of pixel wall portions. A recessed region is aligned with the light-blocking portion. An electrically conductive layer is disposed within the recessed region and disposed on a portion of the light-blocking portion. The electrically conductive layer has a first surface contacting the second liquid.

An electrowetting display device comprises a first support plate comprising a first electrode and a second support plate. A seal connects the first support plate to the second support plate. A first fluid and a second fluid, immiscible with the first fluid, are located between the first and second support plates. A second electrode is in electrical contact with the second fluid. An electrical connector connects the first electrode to the second electrode. A barrier structure at least partly surrounds the electrical connector. The electrical connector and the barrier structure are separated from the first fluid and the second fluid by the seal.

A display device includes a first support plate and an opposing second support plate. A wall is formed on the first support plate. A portion of the wall is associated with an electrowetting pixel. A distal end of the wall portion forms a non-planar contact surface having a first surface feature. A spacer is positioned between the second support plate and the wall portion. The spacer has a distal end forming a non-planar contact surface with a second surface feature complementary to the first surface feature. The non-planar contact surface of the spacer contacts the non-planar contact surface of the wall portion.

Electrowetting display pixel walls and spacers having surface features

Subject matter disclosed herein relates to arrangements and techniques that provide for improving contact between spacers of a first substrate of an electrowetting display device and pixel walls of a second substrate of the electrowetting display device by providing an adhesive between the spacers and the pixel walls. An electrowetting display device comprises a first substrate including a plurality of pixel walls and a second substrate including a plurality of spacers. A first fluid is disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate within the pixel walls. A second fluid is disposed on the first fluid, wherein the first fluid is immiscible with the second fluid. An adhesive couples the spacers to the pixel walls.

Contact of spacers to pixel walls in an electrowetting device

An electrowetting display comprises a bottom support plate including pixel walls and a top support plate that includes spacers. The pixel walls and/or the spacers may be joined together to create a joined spacer and pixel wall before being fully cured. In some configurations, the pixel walls and the spacers are made from photoresist that is not fully cured before assembly of the display. After aligning the spacers over the pixel walls, the spacers and pixel walls are joined. In some configurations, the junction of the pixel walls and the spacers is exposed to UV light to more fully cure the photoresist. In addition, or alternatively to exposure to the UV light compressive force may be applied to fuse the pixel walls and spacers. The assembled display may also be exposed to a final bake to more fully cure the photoresist.

Techniques and architectures involving fabricating a display panel, such as an electro-wetting display panel include laminating a first support plate and a second support plate together to form a laminated display panel. The laminated display panel includes an ultra-violet (UV) light curable seal disposed between the first support plate and the second support plate proximate to edges of the laminated display panel. After conveying the laminated display panel to a UV light curing station, pressurized air, gas or fluid is applied to the laminated display panel to produce a pressure on the UV light curable seal between the first support plate and the second support plate. While applying the pressurized air, gas or fluid, the laminated display panel is exposed to UV light to cure the seal.

Lamination method and apparatus

A method for fabricating an electrowetting display may include disposing an etching barrier on a substrate to delineate a first region and a second region of the substrate, the etching barrier covering the second region of the substrate; etching the first region of the substrate to form an etched first region of the substrate, wherein at least a portion of the second region of the substrate is a protrusion formed in response to the etching of the first region; removing the etching barrier; disposing a black matrix on the second region of the substrate; and forming a spacer over the black matrix disposed on the second region of the substrate.
