Digital certificates are signed by a server's private key and installed at lock controllers that restrict access to physical resources. The server's public key is distributed to lock controllers and to wireless mobile devices operated by users who are given access to primary locks which secure access to physical resources, and secondary locks, which retain the primary locks within operable vicinity to the physical resources. Additionally, tertiary locks may secure access to internal components of the primary or secondary locks. When a wireless mobile device enters the vicinity of a lock controller, the digital certificate of the lock controller is used as the basis for encrypted communications between the wireless mobile device and the lock controller. Wireless mobile devices may be used to gather evidence of integrity of the locks after use. Lock controllers may be powered by energy harvesting devices.

Secure locking of physical resources using asymmetric cryptography

A lock for securing access to a physical resource is provided. The lock includes a wireless interface configured for communication with a plurality of lock access devices in vicinity of the lock. The wireless interface is further configured to receive digital certificates from the plurality of lock access devices. The lock further includes a memory configured to store a public key, and a processor configured to authenticate a digital certificate received from a lock access device using the public key. The processor may further be configured to extract a wait time parameter, scheduled access period parameter, or re-use parameter from the digital certificate. In addition, the processor is configured to unlock the lock after a delay period based on the wait time parameter, during a scheduled access period based on the scheduled access period parameter, or based on the number of times indicated by the re-use parameter.

Asymmetric cryptography assisted authentication and access protocols

Devices, systems, and methods for preparing an electronic lock controller to obtain a digital certificate that verifies authenticity of the electronic lock controller are provided. The method involves physically marking an electronic lock controller with a mark containing digitally signed lock information. The digitally signed lock information includes a hardware identifier, and is digitally signed at a server using a private key of the server. The method further involves loading the electronic lock controller with self-provisioning instructions to cause the electronic lock controller to obtain a digital certificate that includes the public key of the electronic lock controller and the hardware identifier, the digital certificate having been signed by a private key of the server.

Secure provisioning of electronic lock controllers

Digital certificates are signed by a server's private key and installed at lock controllers that restrict access to physical resources. The server's public key is distributed to lock controllers and to mobile electronic devices operated by users who are given access to the physical resources. Lock-access data is digitally signed by the server's private key and provided to mobile electronic devices to facilitate access. The lock controller validates lock-access data and grants access conditionally based on time, version, and/or identity data provided within lock-access data. The use of certificates reduces the need to rely on a security scheme specific to the network. Lock controllers can also broadcast status notifications, so that updates and log data can be securely communicated with the server using mobile electronic devices as a proxy. The system is highly scalable, as each lock controller need not track the full scope of access permissions.
