This document describes techniques and systems for vehicle localization based on radar detections in garages and other GNSS denial environments. In some examples, a system includes a processor and computer-readable storage media comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the system to obtain structure data regarding a GNSS denial environment and generate, from the structure data, radar localization landmarks. The radar localization landmarks include edges or corners of the GNSS denial environment. The instructions also cause the processor to generate polylines along or between the radar localization landmarks to generate a radar occupancy grid. The instructions further cause the processor to receive radar detections from one or more radar sensors and obtain a vehicle pose within the radar occupancy grid to localize the vehicle within the GNSS denial environment. In this way, the system can provide highly accurate vehicle localization in GNSS denial environments in a cost-effective manner.

Vehicle localization based on radar detections in garages

A parking-assist system suitable for use on an automated vehicle includes a radar sensor and a controller. The radar-sensor detects a first-vehicle and a second-vehicle adjacent to a travel-path of a host-vehicle. A distance between the first-vehicle and the second-vehicle defines a parking-space. The controller is in communication with the radar-sensor. The controller determines the distance before the host-vehicle enters a zone of the travel-path adjacent to the parking-space. The zone has a length determined by the distance, and the controller determines when the parking-space is large enough to accommodate the host-vehicle based on the distance.

Parking-assist system

An environmental sensing system relating to vehicle lane position includes first and second sensors respectively configured to provide first and second signals indicative of a vehicle lane position. A steering system achieves a desired lane position in response to a command from a controller to keep the vehicle in its lane, for example, during autonomous control of the vehicle. The controller uses the first signal if the first sensor provides a desired lane marker confidence. The controller switches to the second sensor and uses the second signal if the first sensor cannot provide the desired lane marker confidence and the second sensor can provide the desired lane marker confidence.

Lane keeping system for autonomous vehicle during camera drop-outs

A system and method to provide a notification to an operator of a vehicle that an object is proximate to the vehicle. Data from a visible light camera and a multiple zone temperature sensor are combined or fused to determine which regions of a display should be highlighted in order to help the vehicle operator better notice or discern an object shown on a display. The region or area of the display highlighted is determined by displaying a highlighted area or icon on the display corresponding to an area where objects detected on image data maps of hue and/or saturation and/or intensity data from the camera intersect with objects detected on a temperature data map from the temperature sensor. Misalignment between the camera and the temperature sensor may be tolerated by expanding the object detected on the various maps in order to increase the probability of an intersection occurring.

Object detection system and method using a camera and a multiple zone temperature sensor

An object detection system is provided for detecting a thermal emitting object in a blind zone proximate to a host vehicle. The system includes a thermal radiation detector located on a host vehicle and configured to sense temperature of multiple coverage zones proximate to the host vehicle. A processor processes temperature sensed by an infrared detector. The processor determines a change in thermal temperature sensed by the infrared detector and determines the presence of an object in the coverage zone based on the change in the sensed temperature. An output provides a signal indicative of an object sensed in the coverage zone based on the determined change in temperature. The thermal radiation detector may include a first infrared detector configured to measure temperature of a first coverage zone by receiving infrared radiation from the first coverage zone, and a second infrared detector configured to measure temperature of second and third coverage zones by receiving infrared radiation from the second and third coverage zones.

Vehicle zone detection system and method

The present invention provides a system and method for enabling a vehicle having adaptive cruise control to reduce its speed in a turn according to the vehicle's position within the turn as well as ignoring objects detected during the turn that are not in the vehicle's path. The method of the present invention includes the steps of operating the vehicle in an adaptive cruise control mode such that the vehicle is traveling at a set speed; determining whether the vehicle is in a turn in the vehicle's path by detecting change in the vehicle's lateral acceleration; and when the vehicle is determined to be in the turn, reducing the vehicle's speed according to the vehicle's position in the turn, monitoring for objects and maintaining the vehicle's speed if an object is positioned out of the path of the vehicle.
