A trunk piston marine engine lubricating oil composition for a medium-speed compression-ignited marine engine comprises, in a major amount, an oil of lubricating viscosity containing 50 mass % or more of a Group II basestock, and, in respective minor amounts, (A) an overbased metal hydrocarbyl-substituted hydroxybenzoate detergent having a basicity index of 4.5 or less, and (B) an overbased metal hydrocarbyl-substituted hydroxybenzoate detergent having a basicity index of greater than 4.5. The ratio of detergent (A) to detergent (B), both expressed as mass of active ingredient, is in the range from 0.5 to 15. The trunk piston marine engine lubricating oil composition has a TBN (using ASTM D2896) of 20 to 60.

Marine engine lubrication

A lubricating oil composition having a total base number of more than 15 mg KOH/g including oil of lubricating viscosity; detergent; and at least one compound of the formula (I) and/or formula (II): wherein Ar and Ar' represent substituted or unsubstituted aromatic moieties; L and L&#x2032; are linking moieties; each Y is independently &#x2014;ORor H(O(CR))X&#x2014;, wherein X is (CR), O or S; Rand Rare H, alkyl or aryl; Ris alkyl or aryl; each Y&#x2032; is independently Z(O(CR))X&#x2032;&#x2014;, wherein X&#x2032; is (CR), O or S; Rand Rare H, alkyl or aryl; Z is H, acyl, alkyl or aryl; z and z&#x2032; are 1 to 10; n is 0 to 10 when X is (CR)and 2 to 10 when X is O or S; n&#x2032; is 0 to 10 when X&#x2032; is (CR), and 2 to 10 when X&#x2032; is O or S; y and y&#x2032; are 1 to 30; a and a&#x2032; are 0 to 3; and m and m&#x2032; are 1 to 100, with the proviso that in compounds of formula (I), at least one Ar moiety bears at least one group Y and that in compounds of formula (II), at least one Ar&#x2032; moiety bears at least one group Y&#x2032; in wherein Z is not H.

Lubricating oil composition

A lubricating oil composition having a total base number of more than 15 mg KOH/g, as determined by ASTM D2896, and including at least 40 mass % of an oil of lubricating viscosity; at least one detergent; and at least one compound of the formula (II): In formula (II), each Ar independently represents an aromatic moiety having 0 to 3 substituents selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, hydroxy, hydroxyalkyl, acyloxy, acyloxyalkyl, aryloxy, aryloxy alkyl, halo and combinations thereof; each L is independently a linking moiety comprising a carbon-carbon single bond or a linking group; each Y' is independently a moiety of the formula Z(O(CR))X&#x2014;, wherein X is selected from the group consisting of (CR&#x2032;), O and S; R and R&#x2032; are each independently selected from H, Cto Calkyl and aryl; z is 1 to 10; n is 0 to 10 when X is (CR&#x2032;), and 2 to 10 when X is O or S; y is 1 to 30; Z is H, an acyl group, an alkyl group or an aryl group; each a is independently 0 to 3, with the proviso that at least one Ar moiety bears at least one group Y&#x2032; in which Z is not H; and m is 1 to 100.

The residual chlorine content of a polyolefin-substituted carboxylic acylating agent formed by a halogen-assisted reaction of a polyalkene and at least one olefinic, monounsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid, anhydride or ester, is reduced when the reaction is conducted in the presence of a controlled amount of a metal compound.

Method of forming polyalkene substituted carboxylic acid compositions

A process for forming an ene reaction product wherein an enophile, such as maleic anhydride, is reacted with reactive polyalkene having a terminal vinylidene content of at least 30 mol. %, at high temperature in the presence of a free radical inhibitor. The polyalkenyl acylating agents are useful per se as additives in lubricating oils, functional fluids, and fuels and also serve as intermediates in the preparation of other products (e.g., succinimides) useful as additives in lubricating oils, functional fluids, and fuels. The presence of the free radical inhibitor during the high temperature reaction results in a reaction product that is low, or substantially free from sediment.

Low sediment process for thermally reacting highly reactive polymers and enophiles

A process for producing polyalkenyl acylating agent, wherein, upon completion of the thermal reaction of a polyalkene and an unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid or anhydride compound, the reaction mixture is allowed to cool to below the reaction temperature, an additional amount of unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid or anhydride compound is added to the cooled reaction mixture, which is then maintained in the reactor for a time period, optionally with agitation. Reducing the temperature of the reaction mixture prior to the introduction of additional unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid or anhydride compound minimizes further reaction between the additional unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid or anhydride compound and any remaining unreacted polyalkene, as well as self-polymerization of the unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid or anhydride compound. Polymerized unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid or anhydride compound in the reactor, suspended in the reaction mixture in the form of sediment or deposited on the internal walls of the reactor vessel as tar, is dissolved by the additional unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid or anhydride compound and removed from the reactor upon draining of the reactor vessel.

Process for forming polyalkenyl acylating agents

The residual chlorine content of a polyolefin-substituted carboxylic acylating agent formed by a chlorine-assisted reaction of a polyolefin and an &agr;,&bgr;-unsaturated carboxylic reactant can be reduced by heating the polyolefin-substituted carboxylic acylating agent having a residual chlorine content in the presence of an &agr;,&bgr;-unsaturated carboxylic reactant, optionally in the further presence of a sulfonic acid. Residual chlorine content can be further reduced by using, in the reaction of the polyolefin &agr;,&bgr;-unsaturated carboxylic reactant, a high speed mixer provided with a dual pitch blade.

Polyalkene-substituted carboxylic acid compositions having reduced chlorine content

A low-sediment, low-tar, chlorine-free thermal process for preparing oil-soluble polyalkenyl derivatives of monounsaturated C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 monocarboxylic acid producing compounds and monounsaturated C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 dicarboxylic acid producing compounds is disclosed. The process involves reacting the mono- or dicarboxylic acid producing compound with a polyalkene at high temperature and under high inert gas partial pressure in the presence of a sediment-inhibiting amount of hydrocarbyl substituted sulfonic acid. The polyalkenyl derivatives are useful per se as additives in lubricating oils, functional fluids, and fuels and are also useful as intermediates in the preparation of other products (e.g., succinimides) useful as additives in lubricating oils, functional fluids, and fuels.

Process for preparing polyalkenyl substituted mono- and dicarboxylic

Sulphonates are prepared by the neutralisation of a sulphonic acid with a basic hydroxide or oxide. The process requires the staged addition of sulphonic acid to a reaction mixture comprising basic hydroxide or oxide dispersed in a water/diluent mixture; the reaction mixture is basic throughout the additions of acid and at least until the point of completion of the neutralisation reaction. The basic hydroxide or oxide may also be added in stages. The sulphonate product has low viscosity, low haze and good stability and is essentially chloride free as halide promoters are not utilised in the manufacture of the product.

Process for the preparation of sulphonates

A low-sediment, low-tar, chlorine-free thermal process for preparing oil-soluble polyalkenyl derivatives of monounsaturated C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 dicarboxylic acid producing compounds is disclosed. The process involves reacting the dicarboxylic acid producing compound with a polyalkene at high temperature and under high inert gas partial pressure in the presence of a sediment-inhibiting amount of hydrocarbyl substituted sulfonic acid. The polyalkenyl derivatives are useful per se as additives in lubricating oils, functional fluids, and fuels and are also useful as intermediates in the preparation of other products (e.g., succinimides) useful as additives in lubricating oils, functional fluids, and fuels.
