An apparatus includes a battery having a battery monitoring unit (BMU) and an outer casing, and a resistance measuring device coupled to the outer casing. The battery monitoring unit and the resistance measuring device monitoring a change in surface temperature on the casing of the battery during a charging or discharging of the battery, compare the change in surface temperature with an expected change in surface temperature during the charging or discharging of the battery, and determine that a swelling of the battery has occurred when the change in surface temperature is less than the expected change in the surface temperature.

For indicating that a battery is fully discharged to a decommissioned state, methods, apparatus, and systems are disclosed. One apparatus includes a battery that powers an electronic device, a battery state module that comprises a non-reversible indicator, a control module coupled to the battery, and a decommission module. The decommission module receives a discharge signal from the control module and discharges the battery to a fully discharged state, where discharging the battery causes the non-reversible indicator to indicate the fully discharged state.

An amount of power that is provided to a load is measured. The load is coupled to a battery backup unit (BBU) or an uninterruptable power supply (UPS). The amount of power is stored into a history of power draw for the load. The history of power draw is used to determine a time period or a situation when additional power is required by the load or reduced energy can be provided to the load. The charge of the BBU or the UPS is increased or reduced prior to the time period or the situation when the additional power is required by the load or the reduced energy can be provided to the load.

For selectively restricting the charge level of a battery, methods, apparatus, and systems are disclosed. One apparatus includes a battery, a temperature sensor that measures a temperature of the battery, a processor, and a memory that stores code executable by the processor. Here, the processor selects a maximum charge level using the temperature of the battery, where the maximum charge becomes less than a full charge level of the battery in response to the battery temperature being above a threshold temperature. Moreover, the processor restricts charging of the battery to the maximum charge level in response to the temperature of the battery being above the threshold temperature.

In one aspect, a device includes system components and a battery pack. The battery pack includes one or more cell balancing resistors, plural battery cells in a circuit with the one or more cell balancing resistors, at least one processor, and storage accessible to the processor. The storage includes instructions executable by the processor to determine whether a threshold amount of time has accrued during which the device has not been operated on battery power and, responsive to a determination that the threshold amount of time has accrued, employ the one or more cell balancing resistors of the battery pack to reduce the charge level of the plural battery cells.

Battery malfunction is limited by accelerating battery discharge once battery voltage reaches a low voltage threshold. This can be done programmatically and/or using a hardware arrangement that shorts the battery to ground when the low voltage threshold is reached.

One embodiment provides a device, including: an input port; a battery pack comprising one or more battery cells; a processor; and a memory that stores instructions executable by the processor to: determine that a connected power plug supplies one or more of a current and a voltage; and thereafter provide current supply from the input port to the battery pack for charging the one or more battery cells; wherein said device operates using battery power concurrent with charging of the one or more battery cells with the current supply from the input port.
