The present invention relates to a carrier system for fragrances, to the production thereof and to the use of the carrier system in laundry and cosmetic formulations. Accordingly, the present invention is directed to a microcapsule comprising a core of hydrophobic material composed of at least one fragrance or perfume and a microcapsule shell obtainable by the suspension polymerization of the following monomers:

Carrier system for fragrances

A composition such as a water-based consumer product comprises material (e.g. perfume) encapsulated within shell capsules, each capsule comprising an encapsulating wall having an inner surface and an outer surface, with a coating on the inner surface and/or outer surface of the shell wall, the composition further comprising surfactant and/or solvent. The coating can improve the barrier properties of the shell and can enhance retention of the encapsulated materials within the shell.

A malodor reducing perfume composition comprising materials a having fruity note and a two groups of an amber note material where the amount of amber and fruity materials together is at least 3% by weight where the total weight percentage of group A amber materials and group B amber materials, WA, is equal to or greater than 0.5% or the total amount of amber and fruity materials together is at least 3+22*(0.5&#x2212;WA) % by weight where WA is less than 0.5%; wherein amber note materials have an odour threshold lower than that of 1-(2,3,8,8-tetramethyl-1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8octahydronaphthalen-2-yl)ethanone and group B comprises materials with an amber note having an odour threshold equal to or higher than that of 1-(2,3,8,8-tetramethyl1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydronaphthalen-2-yl)ethanone; the weight ratio of amber note material having to fruity note material in the composition is in the range about 1:30 to 30:1.

Perfume compositions

Perfume compositions comprise over 50% by weight of perfume ingredients characterized by possessing (i) a molecular formula possessing from 8 to 13 carbon atoms, including at least one phenyl moiety, substituted or unsubstituted; (ii) an octanol/water partition coefficient (log P) of at least 1.5; (iii) a saturated vapour pressure (SVP) of at least 3 micron Hg at 25 C; and (iv) belonging to one of the following groups (i) ethers of general formula R1OR2; (ii) aldehydes or nitriles of general formula RIX, wherein X is CHO (formyl group) or CN (cyano group); (iii) esters of general formula R1CO2R2; (iv) alcohols or phenols of general formula R1OH; or (v) ketones of general formula R1COR2; wherein R1 and R2 are alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl residues, optionally substituted, whose alkyl moieties may be straight-chained or branched, and which may be linked as part of a ring structure. The compositions find particular application in the form of encapsulates for use in consumer products.

A perfume encapsulate comprises an aminoplast capsule, the capsule shell comprising urea-formaldehyde or melamine-formaldehyde polymer and a second polymer comprising a polymer or copolymer of one or more anhydrides, preferably ethylene/maleic anhydride copolymer. The second polymer improves the stability of the capsules with respect to surfactant, thus improving perfume retention properties and enabling use of the capsules in aqueous surfactant-containing products in a way that has not hitherto been possible.

Perfume encapsulates

Particles suitable for inclusion in a dry product or article, typically a laundry powder, comprise a core of swellable material, e.g. an organic polymer, containing perfume absorbed therein, the core being coated with water-soluble encapsulating material impervious to the perfume. The coating of the particles acts to prevent premature evaporation or dissipation from the particles of the loaded perfume until the coating is dissolved on contact with water in use.

Particles

A liquid detergent composition contains greater than 5% by weight of surfactant and an encapsulate containing greater than 10% by weight of active material in a hydrated cross-linked anionic gum matrix. The anionic gum is preferably an alginate. The active material is preferably a fragrance. The detergent composition is particularly suitable for use as a laundry liquid.

Detergent composition

Perfume is absorbed within organic polymer particles which have a further polymer at their exterior. The further polymer incorporates free hydroxyl groups and serves to promote deposition of the particles from a wash or rinse liquor. The further polymer may be part of an encapsulating shell, but more conveniently is used as a stabilizer during polymerization of the particles. Highly hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol is preferred.

Compositions containing perfume

A perfume fixative consisting essentially of polyvinylpyrrolidone, hydroxy propyl cellulose and hydrophobic oil. The perfume fixative is being incorporated in a perfume-containing formulation or product. The fixative is found to be effective in enhancing perfume life, even when utilized at low levels.

An encapsulation process employs an aqueous dispersion of silica having a particle size not substantially greater than 100 nm. An emulsion is formed by high shear mixing of the silica dispersion with the material to be encapsulated and the emulsion is gelled. The process allows hydrophobic materials to be encapsulated in structures which have a high loading of the material and a good degree of imperviousness in the presence of other materials such as surfactants and mineral oils. Using the process, hydrophobic materials such as flavours, fragrances and cosmetic ingredients can be encapsulated for delayed release in a wide variety of products.

Encapsulating method and products containing encapsulated material

The invention concerns clear o/w microemulsions comprising a perfume oil, an aqueous phase and one or more surfactants with HLB between 9 and 18, and co-surfactants of which at least 0.5% of ionic co-surfactant. The weight ratio of perfume oil to total surfactant is between 0.85 and 2.5, and preferably above 1. The quantity of perfume oil is 0.01-40% w/w, preferably below 35%, of the microemulsion and the quantity of water at least 40% w/w, preferably at least 50%. The microemulsions comprise less than 10% preferably less than 5%, of alcohol. The surfactants are preferably of the nonionic type. The microemulsions are very suitable for perfuming purposes where the amount of organic solvents should preferably be kept to a minimum, such as for perfuming skin or hair. The invention also concerns surfactant/perfume mixtures suitable for preparing the clear o/w microemulsions.

Aqueous perfume oil microemulsions

The invention concerns a process for incorporating a perfume into a personal product, wherein the perfume is first combined with one or more non-ionic emulsifiers and an aqueous phase to form a structured emulsion containing liquid crystal structures, which surround the dispersed perfume, and thereafter this structured emulsion is dispersed into a personal product base. The invention also concerns the personal products thus obtained and the structured emulsions used in the process. The structured emulsions comprise 1-30 % by weight of one or more non-ionic emulsifiers, 1-50% by weight of a perfume and 20-98% by weight of an aqueous phase. Preferably low shear mixing is used in preparing the emulsions.
