The present disclosure provides methods and apparatuses for performing channel estimation in a wireless environment using a Primary Physical Common Control Channel (P-CCPCH) to aid in channel estimation. For example, according to an example method provided by the present disclosure, a user equipment (UE) may receive a pilot signal and a Primary Physical Common Control Channel (P-CCPCH) signal from a network entity. In an aspect, the P-CCPCH signal may include initial broadcast channel (BCH) data layered thereon. Furthermore, the UE may predict estimated P-CCPCH data based on the initial BCH data. Additionally, in an aspect, the UE may estimate a channel based on at least the estimated P-CCPCH data and the pilot signal. As such, more reliable channel estimation is possible in wireless systems, such as at UE locations at the geographical periphery of a network entity serving area.

Methods and apparatus for signal conditioning for polar transmitters

Apparatus and methods for QAM modulation are disclosed using dual polar modulation. QAM modulation of a signal is accomplished by translating a QAM signal into two phasors having the same or constant amplitude and then phase shifting one of the phasor by 180 degrees for a differential load. The phasors are then polar modulated such that, when differentially combined in the load through summation or superposition, a QAM modulated symbol results. The use of constant amplitude phasors when power amplified for transmission of QAM modulated signals allows amplifiers to be operated in a saturation mode with greater efficiency than conventional amplifiers used in QAM modulation, which operate in a less efficient linear mode to effect amplitude modulation. Additionally, differential combining of the phasors affords relaxation of the turns of a transformer used in amplifying the phasors.

The invention includes a method for narrowing the PN-code phase search. That is, by accounting for the variables in geographic location and time delay relative to GPS time, the systems and methods of the present invention generate a narrow code-phase search range that enables the terminal unit to more quickly acquire and track the necessary GPS satellites, and thereby more quickly provide accurate position information to a requesting entity.

A position determination system and apparatus for utilizing a network of cellular base stations to determine position of a mobile station includes taking a plurality of statistically independent data measurements of the pilot signals from the base stations. Each of the data measurements includes an earliest time of arrival, providing multiple independent measurements for each of the pilot signals. For each cellular base station, a representative measurement is calculated responsive to the independent measurements, which is used to determine position of the mobile station using an AFLT algorithm and/or in conjunction with a GPS algorithm. In some embodiments, the data measurements for each pilot signal further include an RMSE estimate and time of measurement for each time of arrival, and an energy measurement for all resolvable paths. If the mobile station comprises a cell phone, a cell search list and a GPS search list may be provided by a cell base station.

A method for estimating a size of reverse link resources provided by a base-station transceiver system (BTS), including performing respective first, second, and third measurements of first, second, and third signal strengths received at the BTS. The method also includes comparing the first measurement with the second measurement so as to determine an initial minimum signal strength, and adding at a predetermined time an aging value to the initial minimum signal strength so as to form an updated minimum signal strength. The method further includes forming a comparison between the updated minimum signal strength and the third measurement, determining from the comparison a minimum of the updated minimum signal strength and the third measurement to be a minimum received signal strength, and determining the size of the reverse link resources provided by the BTS in response to the minimum received signal strength.

A parameter estimator for estimating one or more parameter(s) from a correlation function derived from a signal using a dynamically variable integration time is described. The parameter estimator may be employed in a subscriber station to estimate the time of arrival of one or more base station or sector pilot signals in a wireless communication system. This information may be utilized in an overall advanced forward link trilateration (AFLT) process for estimating the location of the subscriber station.

Parameter estimator with dynamically variable integration time

A method of producing a reliability metric for a parameter estimate derived from a signal using correlation analysis is described. The method begins by obtaining an indication of whether a non line of sight signal condition is present or likely and/or obtaining an indication of whether a multi-path signal condition is present or likely. Responsive to one or both of these indications, the method derives a reliability metric for the parameter estimate. In one embodiment, the parameter estimate is an estimate of time of arrival (TOA) of the signal, and the reliability metric is root mean square error (RMSE) of the time of arrival estimate. This embodiment obtains an indication of whether a non line of sight signal condition is present or likely based on a measure of the strength of the correlation function at the peak thereof. The measure of the strength of the correlation function at the peak thereof may be energy per chip divided by total received power (E/I) or may simply be the raw energy of the correlation function at the peak. The RMSE metric which is computed in this embodiment varies inversely with the peak strength of the correlation function.

Reliability metrics for parameter estimates which account for cumulative error

A method and apparatus of determining a lower bound of an excess delay in a time of arrival measurement of a received signal. Determining the lower bound of an excess delay in a time of arrival measurements includes receiving signals from at least two base stations and determining the time difference of arrival between the received signals from their respective base stations. Then estimating a lower bound of excess delay introduced into the signals received from the base stations based on the time of arrival of the signals from the respective base stations and a known distance between the base stations. The lower bound of excess delay may be used to adjust the estimate of a mobile unit's location based on the time of arrival measurements of the received signals.
