A relatively large short message (BC-SMS) is broadcast to a selected group of mobile subscriber stations within a cellular radio system. Each BC-SMS message greater in size than a predetermined number of octets is divided into segments, formatted into a separate modified paging message (PBC) which is unrecognizable to existing mobiles but recognizable to new mobiles. The BC-SMS message segments are broadcast in sequence as modified paging messages to the mobiles within the region of the system where the selected group is believed to be operating. Each paging message includes the essential elements of a paging message, a message ID number, a sequence number and the message segment payload.

Method and system for broadcasting large short messages

A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for coordinating requests by applications for notification of when a mobile terminal becomes available in order to allow each requesting application to contact the mobile terminal in a logical order without burdening the system with numerous simultaneous contact attempts by the various requesting applications. When attempts to contact a mobile terminal directly by different applications are unsuccessful, a control node, such as a Home Location Register (HLR) or a Service Control Point (SCP) within an Intelligent Network (IN), can receive notification requests from these nodes or applications and prioritize them according to the time received and/or the priority of each requesting application. Thus, priorities between different applications can be set and intervals between notifications can be controlled to values appropriate for the requesting applications in order to provide an efficient and effective system and method for coordinating notification requests. Therefore, applications which have requested notification are less likely to meet congestion following notification.

System and method for coordinating notification requests for terminal availability

In a mobile telecommunications switching network, mobile stations may be used in static applications such as a telemetry application. The telecommunications switching network can reduce and/or eliminate subscriber numbers allocated to mobile stations that are used in static applications by taking advantage of the fact that the location of such mobile stations is always known and does not change. Accordingly, the mobile stations can be identified and located within the switching network by a unique combination of paging area identification number (e.g., a mobile switching center identification code) and international mobile subscriber identity, rather than by a unique mobile subscriber number (MSN) or mobile station ISDN (MSISDN). Consequently, there is no need to obtain the location information from the network home location register as a function of the MSN or the MSISDN.

Telemetry application numbering for SMS and USSD

A method and apparatus for transferring a short message between an originating mobile station and the short message service center permanently associated with the destination mobile station is disclosed. The originating mobile station sends the short message (including the address of the destination mobile station) to the mobile network over an air interface. The mobile network transfers the short message internally between switching nodes. One of the switching nodes interrogates a subscriber database, and passes the mobile station's address to the database, and passes the information showing that this is a short message submitted from a mobile station. The database checks to determine if the destination mobile station is short message service capable. If not, the short message is terminated. Otherwise, the database returns the address of the short message service center permanently associated with the destination mobile station. The short message is transferred through the mobile network to that short message service center.
