Methods of using pulsed focused ultrasound (pFUS) therapy to treat pancreatic disorders such as type 1 diabetes, pancreatitis, and pancreatic cancer are provided. The methods utilize pulsed focused ultrasound (pFUS) therapy either by itself or in combination with islet transplantation and/or stem cell therapy to promote regeneration of damaged pancreatic tissue, increase insulin secretion in response to glucose, or improve engraftment and revascularization of transplanted islets or beta cells. Additionally, methods of using pFUS are provided for modulating paracrine secretion in the pancreas, islets, beta cells, or stem cells, or at a transplantation site to therapeutically alter levels of various factors including, without limitation, cytokines, growth factors, angiogenic factors, and cell adhesion molecules.

Higher diamondoid derivatives capable of taking part in polymerization reactions are disclosed as well as intermediates to these derivatives, polymers formed from these derivatives and methods for preparing the polymers.

Polymerizable higher diamondoid derivatives

In some embodiments, the present invention is directed to methods for synthesizing higher diamondoids, wherein said methods involve augmenting existing diamondoid molecules through the bonding of carbon atoms to such existing diamondoid species with intramolecular cross-linking so as to form larger diamondoids containing face-fused diamond-crystal (adamantane) cages with carbon frameworks superimposable on the cubic-diamond crystal lattice.

Synthesis of higher diamondoids

This invention is related to heteroatom containing diamondoids (i.e., 'heterodiamondoids') which are compounds having a diamondoid nucleus in which one or more of the diamondoid nucleus carbons has been substitutionally replaced with a noncarbon atom. These heteroatom substituents impart desirable properties to the diamondoid. In addition, the heterodiamondoids are functionalized affording compounds carrying one or more functional groups covalently pendant therefrom. This invention is further related to polymerizable functionalized heterodiamondoids. In a preferred aspect of this invention the diamondoid nuclei are triamantane and higher diamondoid nuclei. In another preferred aspect, the heteroatoms are selected to give rise to diamondoid materials which can serve as n- and p-type materials in electronic devices can serve as optically active materials.

Heterodiamondoids

This invention is directed to functionalized higher diamondoids having at least one functional group. Preferably these derivatives have the following Formula I: wherein D is a higher diamondoid nucleus and wherein R, R, R, R, Rand Rare independently selected from a group consisting of hydrogen and functional groups, provided that there is at least one functional group on the derivative. The functionalized higher diamondoid compounds may also be of the formula D&#x2014;L&#x2014;(D)wherein D is a higher diamondoid nucleus and L is a linking group and n is 1 or more. The functionalized higher diamondoid compounds additionally may be of the formula R&#x2014;D&#x2014;D&#x2014;Rwherein D is a higher diamondoid nucleus and Rand Rare substituents.

Functionalized higher diamondoids

Novel positive-working photoresist compositions are disclosed. The monomers of the base resin of the resist contain diamondoid-containing pendant groups higher than adamantane in the polymantane series; for example, diamantane, triamantane, tetramantane, pentamantane, hexamantane, etc. The diamondoid-containing pendant group may have hydrophilic-enhancing substituents such as a hydroxyl group, and may contain a lactone group. Advantages of the present compositions include enhanced resolution, sensitivity, and adhesion to the substrate.

Photoresist compositions comprising diamondoid derivatives

These heterodiamondoids are diamondoids that include heteroatoms in the diamond lattice structure. The heteroatoms may be either electron donating, such that an n-type heterodiamondoid is created, or electron withdrawing, such that a p-type heterodiamondoid is made. Bulk materials may be fabricated from these heterodiamondoids, and the techniques involved include chemical vapor deposition, polymerization, and crystal aggregation. Junctions may be made from the p-type and n-type heterodiamondoid based materials, and microelectronic devices may be made that utilize these junctions. The devices include diodes, bipolar junction transistors, and field effect transistors.

Heteroatom-containing diamondoid transistors

Novel compounds having a hybrid cubic/hexagonal diamond crystal structure are disclosed. Each of the four compounds have the stoichiometric formula CHand a molecular weight of 344. The four compounds are contemplated to have a utility in diamond film nucleation.

Novel heterodiamondoid-containing field emission devices (FED's) are disclosed herein. In one embodiment of the present invention, the heteroatom of the heterodiamondoid comprises an electron-donating species (such as nitrogen) as part of the cathode or electron-emitting component of the field emission device.

Heterodiamondoid-containing field emission devices

Novel diamondoid-based components that may be used in nanoscale construction are disclosed. Such components include rods, brackets, screws, gears, rotors, and impellers. Subassemblies (or subsystems) may comprise one or more diamondoid components. Exemplary subassemblies include atomic force microscope tips, molecular tachometers and signal waveform generators, and self-assembling cellular membrane pores and channels.

Diamondoid-based components in nanoscale construction

Novel uses of diamondoid-containing materials in the field of microelectronics are disclosed. Embodiments include, but are not limited to, thermally conductive films in integrated circuit packaging, low-k dielectric layers in integrated circuit multilevel interconnects, thermally conductive adhesive films, thermally conductive films in thermoelectric cooling devices, passivation films for integrated circuit devices (ICs), and field emission cathodes. The diamondoids employed in the present invention may be selected from lower diamondoids, as well as the newly provided higher diamondoids, including substituted and unsubstituted diamondoids. The higher diamondoids include tetramantane, peritamantane, hexamantane, heptamantane, octamantane, nonamantane, decamantane, and undecamantane. The diamondoid-containing material may be fabricated as a diamondoid-containing polymer, a diamondoid-containing sintered ceramic, a diamondoid ceramic composite, a CVD diamondoid film, a self-assembled diamondoid film, and a diamondoid-fullerene composite.

Diamondoid-containing low dielectric constant materials

Novel uses of higher diamondoids are disclosed. Specifically, higher diamondoids may be used to nucleate diamond films and diamond-like carbon films. Such higher diamondoids include iso-tetramantane [1(2)3], anti-tetramantane [121], the two enantiomers of skew-tetramantane [123], the ten possible pentamantane, the thirty nine possible hexamantanes, the one hundred sixty heptamantanes, as well as the various octamantanes, nonamantanes, decamantanes, and undecamantanes.
