A muffler for receiving exhaust gas from a combustion engine comprises a shell, first and second inlet pipes each having outlets providing exhaust gas to a mixing chamber within the shell, a first chamber and a second chamber positioned within the shell and a pair of communication pipes each including an inlet receiving exhaust gas from the mixing chamber. Each communication pipe includes an outlet providing exhaust to the second chamber. Each of the communication pipes further includes a Helmholtz opening positioned downstream of the mixing chamber. The Helmholtz openings are open to the first chamber.

Acoustically tuned muffler

A muffler may include a shell, first and second baffles, an inlet pipe, first and second outlet pipes, and a communication pipe. The first and second baffles cooperate with the shell to define first, second and third chambers. The first inlet pipe may extend through the shell and may provide exhaust gas to at least one of the first and second chambers. Exhaust gas in the first chamber exits the muffler through the first outlet pipe. Exhaust gas in the second chamber exits the muffler through the second outlet pipe. The communication pipe may include first, second and third openings. The first opening is in communication with the first chamber. The second opening is in communication with the second chamber. The third opening is in communication with the third chamber. The first and second chambers may be in communication with the third chamber through the communication pipe.

An exhaust gas treatment system for reducing emissions from an engine includes an exhaust conduit adapted to supply an exhaust stream from the engine to an exhaust treatment device. The conduit includes an aperture. An injector injects a reagent through the aperture and into the exhaust stream. A flow modifier is positioned within the exhaust conduit upstream of the injector. The flow modifier includes a diverter for increasing the velocity of the exhaust gas at a predetermined location within the conduit relative to the injected reagent.

Pre-injection exhaust flow modifier

An exhaust system for an engine having a plurality of combustion chambers includes a housing containing a first array of parallel positioned emission treatment devices and a second array of parallel positioned emission treatment devices axially spaced apart from one another. A first exhaust passageway is in fluid communication with the combustion chambers and contains the first array of emission treatment devices. A second and separate exhaust passageway is in fluid communication with the combustion chambers and contains the second array of emission treatment devices. A first valve restricts the exhaust flow through the first exhaust passageway. A second valve restricts the exhaust flow through the second exhaust passageway.

High volume exhaust gas treatment system

An injector mount system () is provided for mounting an injector () to an exhaust flow conduit () in an exhaust treatment system (). The injector () includes a housing () having an open end () that mounts an orifice/nozzle (). The injector mount system () includes a boss () fixed to the exhaust flow conduit (), and an end cap () of the injector () that is attached to the housing (), closing the open end () and securing the orifice/nozzle () in the open end (). The boss () and end cap () include mating flanges () that define a non-threaded connector for securing the injector () to the exhaust flow conduit (). The mating flange () of the end cap () being formed as a unitary part of the end cap (), and the mating flange () of the boss being a unitary part of the boss ().

Injector mounting system

An exhaust mixer () is provided for use in an engine exhaust system () downstream from an additive injector (). The mixer () includes a first wall structure (), and a second wall structure () carrying a set of mixer vanes (), the second wall structure () being cone shaped and extending radially outwardly from the first wall structure ().
