A print drive is present in an electronic pre-press workflow that includes a raster image processor ('RIP') and an output device to receive, store, combine and transmit raster data processed by the raster image processor. A prepress imposition scheme is created at the front end and processed by the RIP. Prepress imposition parameters are used to generate a press sheet template image, which is transmitted to the print drive. The print drive is capable of applying the press sheet template to page raster data on demand to form a multi-page press sheet assembly so that raster images of individual pages remain independent. Among other benefits, this improves electronic prepress workflow by eliminating the need to generate combined raster images of multi-page press sheets to correct or modify a portion of the assembly.

Just-in-time raster image assembly

An imaging system includes image processors, storage devices, one or more print drivers, and one or more image makers. The image processors generate image data representing an image. The storage devices store the image data. The print driver(s) generate instructions corresponding to the image data. The image maker(s) generate a representation of the image in accordance with the instructions. A first communications network interconnects the image processors and the print driver(s). A second communications network interconnects the image processors, the print driver(s), and the storage devices.

Enhanced networked pre-press imaging

A print drive that is placed in a prepress workflow between a raster image processor and an output device receives first and second raster data corresponding to first and second image data, and processed by the raster image processor. The print drive uses the second raster data to modify the first raster data. In one embodiment, the first raster data is digitally combined with the second raster data using a digital doubleburner. In another embodiment, a digital masker uses the second raster data as a mask to selectively delete a portion of the first raster data. When used in succession, the digital masker and the digital doubleburner permit the editing of raster data which is rendered through the output device as a modified printed image.

Method and apparatus for modifying raster data

A method for automatically processing a job in a prepress printing environment includes the steps of: moving an image receiving substrate from a storage bin to a staging area; moving the image receiving substrate from the staging area into a drum; imaging a predefined area of the image receiving substrate in the drum with a laser while simultaneously moving a next image receiving substrate from the storage bin to the staging area; upon completion of the imaging of the image receiving substrate in the drum, simultaneously (a) moving the image receiving substrate from the drum into a processing area for developing an image on the image receiving substrate, and (b) moving the next image receiving substrate from the staging area into the drum; and finally repeating the above steps until the job is completed. The method optionally includes: offsetting the position of the image receiving substrate to alter the location upon the image receiving substrate where the image will be burned; or offsetting the laser position to alter the location upon the image receiving substrate where the image will be burned. A slug line can also be printed at print time outside of the predefined area, and can include identifying information such as a job name, a print drive job identification, a time stamp, a plane name, a page number and user-defined graphics.
