A slider for a head to read data from or write data to a magnetic media is disclosed. The slider includes an air bearing surface including raised bearing surface(s) elevated above recessed bearing surface(s) to pressurize air flow along the air bearing surface to provide a fly height for the slider above the media. The raised bearing surfaces are formed along one or more raised substrate structures etched from a substrate body. The slider includes one or more insets inset into the one or more raised substrate structures formed of an inset material having a different coefficient of expansion than a substrate material of the slider to compensate for temperature and/or humidity changes.

Air bearing surface having temperature/humidity compensation feature

A contact pad includes a first layer of material with a first yield strength and a second layer of material with a second yield strength is laminated to the first layer. A third yield strength of the laminated composite of the first layer and the second layer exceeds the first yield strength and the second yield strength due to the Hall-Petch phenomenon. An overcoat covers an edge of the first layer and the second layer of the contact pad to prevent wear. A method of creating the contact pad or other microelectronic structure includes depositing a first layer of material with a first yield strength on a substrate. A second layer of material with a second yield strength is deposited on the first layer. An edge of the first layer and the second layer is coated with an overcoat material to prevent wear of the first and second layers.

Laminated contact pad for a transducer head

A head gimbal assembly (HGA) is provided. The HGA includes a suspension that has a suspension coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and a slider that has a slider CTE. A bonding element attaches the slider to the suspension. A compensation layer, having a compensation CTE, is located on the suspension. The compensation layer serves to compensate for a thermal distortion of the slider. A method of forming a HGA is also provided. The method includes providing a suspension having a suspension CTE and forming a slider having a slider CTE. The method further includes attaching the slider to the suspension and depositing a compensation layer, having a compensation CTE, on the suspension. The compensation layer serves to compensate for a thermal distortion of the slider.

Head gimbal assembly to reduce slider distortion due to thermal stress

A transducer-level microactuator selectively positions a transducer portion of a slider radially with respect to circumferential data tracks of a rotatable disc. The slider includes a slider body having a leading edge and a trailing edge, a transducer body and a flexure body. The transducer body is spaced from the trailing edge of the sliding body and includes at least one transducer element. The flexure body extends from the trailing edge of the slider body and includes a first anchor point connected to the slider body and a second anchor point connected to the transducer body. The basecoat layer is deposited on the trailing edge of the slider body and substantially surrounds the flexure body wherein a gap separates the flexure body from the basecoat. A first actuation assembly is formed on the basecoat and a second actuation assembly is formed on the transducer body adjacent the slider body.

Transducer-level microactuator for a magnetic recording system

A sensor comprises a transducer portion including a semi-permanently deformable portion. A deformation of the semi-permanently deformable portion in response to an activation energy deforms the transducer portion. The deformation is retained after the activation energy is removed. In another embodiment of the invention, a transducer comprises a body having an active element, a magnetostrictive element and a magnet having a magnetic field. The magnetic field causes a deformation of the magnetostrictive portion thereby adjusting the position of the active element.

A slider includes a slider body having a trailing edge and a leading edge. The slider also includes a thin film structure deposited in layers on the trailing edge. The thin film structure includes a write transducer configured to read and write to a storage medium. The thin film structure also includes a non-thermally activated actuator at least partially formed with the write transducer and configured to move the write transducer relative to the trailing edge.

Structures for pole-tip actuation

An air bearing slider includes a slider body, a head stack portion attached to a rear portion of the slider body, and a transducer contained within the head stack having a pole tip for communicating with a disc. A distance separates a plane containing the bottom surface of the pole tip and a plane containing the bottom surface of the slider body. The head stack portion includes a material that is semi-permanently deformable, and a deformation of the material changes the distance. A method for adjusting a pole tip position in an air bearing slider includes providing an air bearing slider having a material within a head stack portion. A distance separates a plane containing the bottom surface of the pole tip and a plane containing the bottom surface of the slider body. The method includes semi-permanently deforming the material to change the distance.

Headstack with semi-permanently deformable element for pole-tip recession adjustment

A magnetic head slider having an air bearing surface is used for reading and writing data from a magnetic medium. The magnetic head includes a substrate having a disc opposing face bounded by a leading face, a trailing face, and first and second sided edges. The slider includes an end layer positioned upon the trailing face of the substrate wherein the basecoat has a disc opposing face and is comprised of a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion greater than a coefficient of thermal expansion of the substrate. An air bearing pad is formed solely on the disc opposing face of the end layer. A transducing head is formed in the air bearing pad and exposed at an air bearing surface.
