A compliant hinge for deployable membrane-like structures and other applications is provided. The compliant hinge generally includes a flexible intermediate portion having one or more enclosed contours connected by inner longitudinal segments along a longitudinal axis of symmetry. The enclosed contours are resiliently deformable in response to an in-plane load, including tension and shear forces. The compliant hinge allows for rotation, bending, and extension, and can interconnect rigid panels in tensioned precision structures and other applications.

A foldable segmented structure includes a substantially center portion and a plurality of strut assemblies radially disposed around the center portion. Each strut assembly includes an inner and outer strut. The inner strut includes a first end portion rotatably coupled at the center portion and a second end portion rotatably coupled to the outer strut at an intermediate portion of the strut assembly. The intermediate portion is spaced apart from the center portion. At least one shell segment is disposed on at least one of the inner and outer strut. Each inner strut is configured to rotatably articulate about the first end portion in a first angular direction. Each outer strut is configured to rotatably articulate about the second end portion in a second angular direction opposite to the first angular direction to form an axially extending structure from the center portion to the intermediate portion in a stowed configuration.

A sparse-isogrid columnar lattice structure including rigid ring frames connected by a mirrored symmetric double helix pattern comprised of first shell hinge elements in a first helical pattern and second shell hinge elements in a second helical pattern oriented in an opposite direction to the first helical pattern and congruent thereto. The helical axes of the first and second helical patterns intersect the respective centers of the ring frames. The first and second shell hinge elements are configured to stow in a stored energy state when the ring frames are collapsed toward one another along the helical axis, and the first and second shell hinge elements are configured to release the stored energy to deploy to a restored state and extend the ring frames apart from each other along the helical axis when deployed to form a stable rigid axial column in a restored state.

Extensible sparse-isogrid column

A reflector useful for communications, radar and sensing application in space and on earth includes thin shell gores emanating from a geometric center of the reflector at its hub. Gores are provided in a spiraled pattern and are in elastic connection to said hub and wrapped around their point of convergence at the hub when the reflector is stowed. The gores emanate from the geometric center of the reflector hub at their elastic connection to the hub when they are deployed and operational as a reflector with a point of convergence to promote operation as a reflector. Thin shell gores can have an inner perimeter and outer perimeter, can be provided in a spiraled pattern, and can be interlocked at their outer perimeter, or in-between their inner and outer perimeter, while also remaining in elastic connection at their inner perimeter to said hub.

Flexible and resilient masts are connected by flexible and resilient inner and outer spars, and flexible cords radially connect the spars. A flexible material is attached to the cords. The assembly is wrapped around a rotatable cylindrical drum in the structure's stored configuration. Each mast is flexible only about an axis lying parallel to the axis of rotation of the drum, and is otherwise rigid. Each mast is linear when extended and has a bending stress when deformed into a non-linear configuration, such as when wrapped around the drum. When the structure is in its stored configuration, a restraining device opposes the bending stress and another prevents the drum from rotating. Upon disengagement of the restraining devices, the stored bending strain energy forces the drum to rotate and the masts to extend into the deployed configuration and thereby unfurl the flexible material.

An elastic space-deployable boom of carbon fiber reinforced plastic or other resilient material having an open substantially triangular cross-section when deployed and stowed with a flattened cross-section about a circular hub.
