An anomalous period of operation of a database management system is detected by analyzing a time series of data points indicating the number of database queries pending processing by the system. Conditions associated with execution of the pending database queries are recorded and analyzed to identify conditions correlated with the anomalous period of operation. A recommendation for tuning the database is generated based on analysis of the conditions.

Assisted database anomaly mitigation

A configuration management system tracks the configuration of a managed computing environment in accordance with a configuration tracking policy. The configuration management system uses the tracking policy to map configuration information from the managed computing environment to a hierarchy of configuration items. Items may be included or excluded from the hierarchy based on relevance to the tracking policy and a predicted amount of dynamism. A signature of the hierarchy is generated. A change to the configuration environment is detected based on a change to the signature, and an action is performed in response to the detected change.

Configuration change tracking

Techniques are described for enabling real-time database performance measurement and tuning in a service provider network. To efficiently test one or more proposed configuration changes to a database in a service provider network, a database service is able to create a replicated copy of the database in an environment that mirrors that of the primary database. The database service then automatically causes database traffic destined for the primary database to be routed to both the primary database and the test database. Once the test database is created and traffic is routed to both databases, the database service obtains performance data by monitoring performance of both the primary database and the test database over a period of time. Based on the obtained performance database, the database service can automatically determine which of the primary database and the test database is exhibiting better performance.

Real-time database performance tuning

Techniques for database query information protection using skeletons are described. An agent installed on a host computing device with a database instance obtains queries executed by the database instance and skeletonizes the queries to remove sensitive data from them. The agent identifies references within the queries, obtains structural definitions for the references, and inserts placeholders into the queries in place of the references and relates the placeholders to the definitions. The query skeletons and/or similarly-constructed execution plan skeletons may be analyzed to identify modifications to queries and/or the database instance to improve query processing.

Database query information protection using skeletons

Data is migrated between a source database and a target database. The source database management system ('DBMS') remains operational during the migration. A user selects the source DBMS and target DBMS, provides connection information used to connect to the database management systems and selects a virtual machine instance to perform the migration in conjunction with a database migration service. After the setup is complete, the virtual machine instance in conjunction with the database migration service performs data type transformations, and other operations, without user intervention. The database migration service also converts, without user intervention, the source schema and code to a format compatible with the target DBMS. Any code that is not converted is marked to assist the user of the database migration service identify where manual re-coding is required. The database migration service can also provide recommendations as to a target DBMS that is a suitable target DBMS.

A method and system for validating data migrated from a source database to a target database and storing validation metrics resulting from validating the data are described. The system receives validation information to be used to validate data to be migrated from a source database to a target database. The system validates the data using the validation information and stores validation metrics resulting from validating the data.

A configuration management system tracks the configuration of a computing environment based on a tracking policy. The configuration management system detects a change to a configuration setting included in the tracking policy, and classifies the change. The classification is indicative of an effect of the change on an ability to manage operation of the computing environment. The configuration management system initiates an action, based at least in part on the classification, in response to the change.

Configuration tracking perimeter

A configuration management service tracks the configuration of a managed computing environment in accordance with a first version of a tracking policy. When an updated version of the tracking policy is received, the configuration management service initiates tracking of the configuration in accordance with the second version of the tracking policy, while continuing to track the configuration in accordance with the first version. A change to the configuration is detected based on the first version of the tracking policy. The change is verified based on the second version of the tracking policy, and a notification of the change is provided.

Configuration change tracking with multiple manifests

The routing of commands within a database cluster is managed by a proxy server. The database cluster is comprised of a master database and at least one read-replica database. When the proxy server receives a database command, the proxy server determines whether the command is capable of being translated into an alternate command that can be executed on the read-replica database. If the command is not capable of being reliably translated, the database command is executed on the master database. If the command is capable of being executed on a read-replica database, the proxy server translates the database command into an alternate command that is compatible with the read-replica database, and executes the alternate command on the read-replica database. If results are returned from the read-replica database, the results may be converted into a format produced by the master database.

A hosted database service may receive a request to replicate data between two locations. Data may be replicated serially during an initial observation period. During the observation period, replication data may be analyzed to detect access patterns involving transaction delimiters and sequential or closely-timed access to data. Related tables may be assigned to replication groups. Replication data for the replication groups may be sent and processed in parallel. During parallel replication, effectiveness of the replication data may be monitored and the replication groups may be periodically readjusted.
