Disclosed is a method for producing a flexible package for dispensing a product through a fitment. The package has a planar enclosed body extending between a bottom end and a top end. The package further includes a planar gusset panel sealed to the body at the top end. The gusset panel is sealed to the body such that the package can be folded so that the gusset panel will lie flat against and in the same plane as the body of the package. The gusset panel further includes an aperture disposed therein. A dispensing fitment extends through the aperture on the gusset panel for dispensing.

In accordance with the present invention there is provided a flexible package for dispensing a product through a fitment. Pouches in an interconnected strip are advanced edgewise to a cut-off station where the leading pouch is severed from the strip. Prior to being severed, the leading pouch is gripped by a transfer mechanism which lifts the severed pouch upwardly into pouch clamps carried on the opposing inboard runs of two chains adapted to advance the pouch broadwise through a filling section and along a path extending at right angles to the path of the pouch strip. An envelope-type pouch is divided into two compartments by a divider panel which is disposed between and is sealed to the two side panels of the pouch. The top margin of the divider panel and the top margin of one of the side panels are disposed above the top margin of the other side panel to facilitate opening of the pouch by an automatic packaging machine. Sealing of the upper end of the pouch is effected by first sealing the top margin of the divider panel to the top margin of the one side panel and then by sealing the top margin of the other side panel to the divider.
