A transmission capability of a mobile station that requests to be affiliated with a talk group is received. It is then determined whether to alter a current transmission mode of the talk group based at least in part upon the transmission capability of the mobile station, the current transmission mode of the talk group, and the transmission mode of one or more radio frequency (RF) sites associated with the talk group.

System and method to dynamically manage a talk group signaling type

Upon detecting a contention between a call request and an active call (404), the call request is added to a busy queue as a contention busied call (412) and at least one logical link is created between the busied call and the active call(s) giving rise to the contention (414). When the active call(s) terminate (502), the at least one logical link is used to identify those busied calls that may be converted to active calls (514), thereby reducing delays associated with the conversion of contention busied calls.

Method for converting contention busied calls in a wireless

A console (203), in communication with a zone controller (201) via a communication link (208), sends a communication request that includes an inbound time slot identification, an inbound audio switch identification, and an inbound multiplexer identification to the zone controller. In a first embodiment, it is assumed that the inbound time slot identification not only identifies an inbound time slot, but also a similarly identified outbound time slot as well. In a second embodiment, an outbound time slot identification is explicitly provided as part of the communication request. An outbound audio switch identification and an outbound multiplexer identification may also be provided as part of the communication request. In this manner, the need for the console to have access to all time slots is eliminated, and the complexity of the zone controller and the console can be reduced.
