An ignition system for a vehicle includes an ignition coil and a thermoelectric cooler. The ignition coil has primary and secondary coils. The ignition coil is configured to deliver electrical power from a battery to a least one spark plug. The thermoelectric cooler is disposed along an external surface of the ignition coil and is configured to transfer heat generated by the primary and secondary coils to an ambient surrounding.

A spark plug for an automotive engine includes a shell housing, and an insulator within the shell housing but extending axially beyond the shell housing. A terminal, referred to herein as a cup post terminal, is fixed to the proximal end of the insulator. The cup post terminal includes an engagement surface configured to engage an ignition coil spring for energy transfer to initiate a spark. The cup post terminal includes a sidewall extending axially from the engagement surface. The sidewall cooperates with the engagement surface to define a pocket for the ignition coil spring. The sidewall can have drainage openings to allow oil or contaminants to escape the pocket and drain away from the engagement between the engagement surface and the ignition coil spring. The engagement surface can also be sloped to facilitate the drainage toward the drainage openings.

A spark plug includes a housing, a center electrode, and a ground electrode assembly. The center electrode is disposed within the housing. The ground electrode assembly cooperates with the center electrode to generate a spark. The ground electrode assembly further includes an arm, a ground electrode, and a ground electrode pad. The arm is fixed to the housing. The ground electrode is disposed opposite the center electrode. The ground electrode pad is disposed on an inner surface of the ground electrode. The ground electrode pad is a precious metal coating on the surface of the inner surface.

A spark plug ground electrode assembly including a ground electrode having a ground electrode base defining a receptacle. A base flange extends about less than an entirety of the receptacle to define an open lateral end of the receptacle. The open lateral end of the receptacle is arranged to receive a ground electrode pad slid into the receptacle and onto a support surface in a direction perpendicular to a spark plug longitudinal axis. The flange of the ground electrode pad is arranged between the base flange and the support surface to restrict movement of the ground electrode pad along the spark plug longitudinal axis. A welding is at the open end of the receptacle to restrict movement of the ground electrode pad in the direction perpendicular to the spark plug longitudinal axis.

An ignition device for an internal combustion engine includes optical focusing lenses, including a center optical focusing lens and satellite optical focusing lens. The center optical focusing lens focuses laser light from a laser generator to a center ignition point in a combustion chamber of a cylinder of the internal combustion engine. The satellite optical focusing lenses focus laser light from the laser generator to satellite ignition points in the combustion chamber of the cylinder of the internal combustion engine. The satellite optical focusing lenses are directionally angled away from the center optical focusing lens. A firing depth of the center ignition point is greater than a firing depth of the at least one satellite ignition point.

A laser ignition device for an internal combustion engine can include a laser generator, a housing, and a window. The laser generator can emit a pulse of laser light. The housing can be coupled to the internal combustion engine. The housing can have a first end and a second end. The second end can be proximate to a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine and can define an aperture through which the laser light is permitted to exit the housing into the combustion chamber. The window can be coupled to the second end of the housing and cover the aperture. The window can permit the laser light to pass through the window and into the combustion chamber. The window can have a rounded outer surface.

The spark plug can include a housing, insulator, first electrode, and ground electrode. The housing can be configured to be coupled to the engine. The insulator can be received in the housing. The first electrode can be received in the housing and can be spaced apart from the housing by the insulator. The ground electrode can have a first end, second end, and base portion. The first and second ends can be coupled to the housing for thermal conduction with the housing. At least one of the first and second ends can be coupled to the housing for electrical conduction with the housing. The base portion can be spaced apart from the first electrode to define a spark plug gap between the first electrode and the base portion.

The housing defines a gas thread cavity that extends radially at least partially through the housing.
