An aspect of the present invention provides a rechargeable battery which makes placement of the electrode assembly in the case during assembly easy. The rechargeable battery includes an electrode assembly including a first electrode, a separator, and a second electrode, a case housing the electrode assembly and having an opening in a plane parallel to a flat side surface of the electrode assembly, the case being electrically connected to the first electrode, a cover closing the opening in the case, and an electrode terminal mounted to a terminal opening in the case and connected to the second electrode, wherein the electrode terminal and the second electrode are insulated from the case.

A battery module is disclosed. In one aspect, the battery module includes: a plurality of rechargeable batteries electrically connected to each other, wherein each of the rechargeable batteries comprises a first short-circuit generator configured to be short-circuited based on an increase in battery internal pressure. The battery module also includes a positive electrode and a negative electrode respectively connected to first and second ones of the rechargeable batteries and a first drawn-out tab and a second drawn-out tab respectively connected to the positive and negative electrodes. The battery module further includes a switch configured to electrically connect the negative electrode and the second drawn-out tab and a second short-circuit generator electrically connected to the switch, wherein the second short-circuit generator overlaps, in the height dimension of each of the rechargeable batteries, the first short-circuit generator of the second rechargeable battery.

A rechargeable battery module includes: a plurality of unit cells, wherein each of the unit cells comprises: an electrode assembly having a plate shape; a case receiving the electrode assembly and having an opening at one side; and a cap assembly sealing the opening of the case, wherein the case comprises a first buffer unit configured to reduce a force generated inside or outside the case on an inner surface and an outer surface of a bottom of the case, the cap assembly comprises a second buffer unit configured to reduce a force generated inside or outside the case on an inner surface and an outer surface of the cap assembly, and the first buffer unit of each unit cell partially overlaps the first buffer unit of a neighboring unit cell.

Embodiments of the present invention provide a rechargeable battery including an electrode assembly including a first electrode and a second electrode. The electrode assembly is spirally-wound. The rechargeable battery also include a case has an opening into which the electrode assembly is inserted, a cover coupled to the case at the opening, and a terminal electrically connected to the second electrode. The terminal extends to the outside of the case. The electrode assembly includes two side surfaces facing opposite directions and two curved surfaces that connect the two side surfaces. A surface of the cover faces a first side surface of the two side surfaces.
