The present invention relates to a vertically aligned LCD (VA-LCD) employing a bi-axial retardation compensation film, in which an in-plain refractive index (n, n) and a thickness refractive index (n) of the film is n&#x3e;n&#x3e;n. The film has a reversed wavelength dispersion in which retardation is increased in proportion to the increase of a wavelength in the range of visible rays and has a normal wavelength dispersion in which an absolute value of the thickness retardation is decreased in proportion to the increase of a wavelength in the range of visible rays. The VA-LCD cell having a retardation compensation characteristic is comprised by arranging a bi-axial retardation compensation film between the vertically aligned panel and a upper and lower polarizing plate. The VA-LCD of the present invention improves contrast characteristics on a front surface and at a tilt angle and minimizes coloring in a black state according to the tilt angle.

Disclosed are a new dichroic dye having liquid crystal properties and dichroic properties and capable of being used for forming a polarization film with excellent heat resistance, durability, and polarizing properties, a composition including the same for a polarization film, a method for forming a polarization plate with excellent durability using the composition, and a polarization plate prepared thereby. The new dichroic dye has a structure of R1-L1-(M,L,D) (where, D is a dichroic structure, M is a structure with liquid crystal properties, R1 is a reactive end functional group, and L and L1 are linking structures). The composition for a polarization film includes the dichroic dye. In the method for forming the polarization plate, the composition for a polarization film is applied to a substrate and cured to prepare the polarization plate. The polarization plate has excellent dichroic ratio, heat resistance, durability, and polarizing properties.

Vertically aligned LCD using a bi-axial retardation compensation film

Provided are a vertically aligned liquid crystal display (VA-LCD) with good viewing angle characteristics, which has liquid crystals with negative dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x2208;&#x3c;0). In the VA-LCD, a polynorbornene based polymer film is used as a protection film and/or as a negative C-plate retardation film for an upper polarization plate and/or a lower polarization plate. Therefore, high contrast characteristics for a front view and an oblique angle view are realized and color change for an oblique angle view can be minimized.

The present invention provides a negative C-plate type optical anisotropic film having negative birefringence along the thickness direction. In particular, the present invention provides a film comprising cycloolefin addition polymer, which is prepared by addition polymerizing norbornene-based monomers, a method for preparing the same, and a liquid crystal display comprising the same. The film of the present invention can be used for optical compensation films of a variety of LCD (liquid crystal display) modes because the refractive index alone the thickness direction can be controlled by the kind and amount of functional groups introduced to the cycloolefin addition polymer.

The present invention relates to a unified polarizing plate, which employs, as a protection layer of a polarizing film, a transparent film that can simultaneously function as a negative C-plate and transparent protection layer of a polarizing film and has negative refractive index toward thickness direction, thereby simultaneously performing functions as a negative C-plate for optical compensation and as a polarizing plate, and a method for preparing the same. The unified polarizing plate has superior durability at high temperature and high humidity compared to those employing TAC as a protection layer, and improves wide view angle of liquid crystal display having positive refractive index toward thickness direction, when the liquid crystal display device is ON or OFF.
