A secondary battery includes a base material, an intermediate layer including a carbon material on the base material, and an active material layer on the intermediate layer. A secondary battery including an intermediate layer may improve adhesion between the base material and the active material layer, thereby reducing the risk of separation of the active material from the base material and improving the reliability and lifetime of the secondary battery.

A system for predicting the thickness of a battery is disclosed. In one aspect, the battery thickness predicting system includes a learning data input unit for receiving data on a previously manufactured battery. The thickness predicting system further includes an object data input unit for receiving data on a battery whose thickness is to be predicted. The system further comprises a mechanical learning unit connected to the learning data input unit to obtain a predicting function based on learning factors input to the learning data input unit and to provide weight values to the learning factors, respectively. The system further includes a thickness predicting unit connected to the object data input unit and the mechanical learning unit and using the weight values provided by the mechanical learning unit in order to predict the thickness of the battery whose thickness is to be predicted.

A rechargeable battery that can improve heat dissipating characteristics is provided. The rechargeable battery includes: an electrode group including a positive electrode; an electrode group that has at least one terminal; a case that defines a recess that receives the electrode group wherein the case includes an opening that provides access to the recess; a film cover that extends over the opening so as to secure the electrode group within the recess of the case; and a heat dissipating member positioned on the case so as extend outward from the case to dissipate heat from the recess containing the electrode group. The positive active material is produced by coating a compound with a metal alkoxide solution, an organic solution of a metal salt or an aqueous solution of a metal salt and heat-treating the coated compound. Thereafter, the heat-treated compound is slow-cooled to 100 to 500&#xb0; C. and the cooled compound is quenched to room temperature.

A sealed battery includes a can for receiving an electric generator, a sealing member crimped on an opening of the can and connected to one of a positive electrode and a negative electrode of the electric generator, a gasket disposed between the can and the sealing member, a cover cap disposed on the sealing member with an insulating member disposed between the cover cap and the sealing member, a current control member disposed between the cover cap and the sealing member to cut-off a flow of current when a temperature of the battery is increased above an allowable level, and a shock absorber disposed between the cover cap and the current control member to prevent shock from being directly transmitted to the current control member.

A negative electrode for a secondary battery includes a substrate deposited with an active material including carbon and a metal oxide selected from aluminum, barium, magnesium and zinc oxides. The metal oxide is coated on a surface of particles of the active material or the metal oxide and the active material are powdered, then mixed together, and deposited on the substrate.
