A method and a multimode terminal for minimizing a mute interval caused when call interruption occurs due to a handover between communication networks which provide communication services using different mobile communication technologies. In the method, communication network modems of the terminal supporting a multimode are interconnected through a one-to-one communication path, so that a voice path through the current communication network is maintained until the handover is completed. If a Handover Completion Message is received, switching to a voice path through a handover-target communication network modem can be performed through the communication path. Further, the modems are interconnected through the communication path, so that a modem switching procedure is not necessary and a handover processing procedure is simplified. Accordingly, handover processing time can also be reduced. In addition, time for switching the voice path is minimized, so that it is possible to considerably reduce a mute interval which inevitably occurs during a handover.

Method and multimode terminal for minimizing mute interval

Disclosed is a method capable of minimizing a period of time required for a handover network acquisition procedure when a handover occurs between communication networks which provide communication services using different mobile communication technologies. When a modem for a handover communication network performs network acquisition due to the occurrence of a handover, the modem previously extracts information about a handover channel from a Universal Handover Direction Message (UHDM), and uses the extracted channel information in a network acquisition procedure. Accordingly, the modem for a handover communication network can easily acquire a handover network even without using a preferred roaming list, and can omit an radio frequency (RF) tuning procedure by extracting a corresponding code division multiple access (CDMA) channel from the received UHDM, thereby reducing the total handover processing time period and increasing the success rate of the handover.

Method for acquiring handover network in multi-mode terminal and multi-mode terminal therefor

Provided is a function of minimizing a delay time of a packet call disconnect due to a handover between communication networks providing a communication service using different mobile communication technologies. To do this, even though a handover situation is generated during a packet service, the packet service is continuously provided by maintaining a current mode and performing a mode change after registration in a handover target network succeeds. Accordingly, since the packet service is not provided only while a packet call connecting process is performed, a delay time according to a packet call reconnection can be minimized.

In this way, by efficiently determining a time point when the handover target communication network modem is powered on, a processing time according to the occurrence of handover can be reduced, and additional current consumption can be minimized.

An apparatus and method for efficiently processing a dormant state in a packet service between communication networks providing the packet service using different mobile communication technologies is disclosed. This method includes disconnecting, by a multi-mode terminal, a current packet call and changing to a new serviceable mode, if a multi-mode terminal moves to a poor communication area in a dormant or preservation state occurring during a packet service. In this state, by immediately returning to a packet call reconnection state if a user performs a subsequent operation, an area in which the packet service cannot be provided can be minimized, and a communication mode in which a best communication service can be provided can be established.

A method for performing roaming in a dual mode mobile terminal in such a manner that a ping-pong phenomenon, occurring under a weak electric field between communication networks providing communication services using different mobile communication techniques can be prevented. To this end, a communication path connected between modems performing a corresponding communication service is realized, so that roaming to a target mode can be achieved only in a case in which the intensity of a received signal measured through a target modem for the roaming has at least a predetermined threshold value.
