A communication apparatus and a method for supporting carrier sense multiple access/collision detection (CSMA/CD) are disclosed. In a home network having a plurality of peripheral apparatuses in one home bus, the communication apparatus includes an interface circuit for transmitting and receiving packet data by being connected to the home bus; a data transmitting circuit for converting transmission data generated from inner peripheral apparatuses into physical transmission data and then for outputting the data on the home bus through the interface circuit; a data receiving circuit for determining whether data transmitted from other peripheral apparatuses through the interface circuit are received in its own peripheral apparatus and for checking a current state of the home bus; a collision detection circuit for continuously detecting a current state of the home bus through the data receiving circuit; and a communication controlling part for controlling data which are output form the data transmitting circuit by detecting a state of the home bus detected from the collision detection circuit.

Methods of detecting a load level in a washing machine include monitoring a rotational speed of a motor of the washing machine for a period of time after the motor has reached an operating speed. In a first method embodying the invention, the number of rotational speed peaks that occur in each of a plurality of speed bands are detected during the period of time. The detected number of speed peaks in each speed band are compared to reference count numbers corresponding to each of the speed bands, and a load level in the washer is determined based on the comparisons. In a second method embodying the invention, the number of times that the rotational speed of the motor exceeds a predetermined speed during a predetermined period of time is detected. The detected number is then compared to reference count numbers, and the load level in the washing machine is determined based on the comparison. This process may be repeated several times if a sensed eccentricity of the washing machine exceeds a predetermined level of eccentricity. If the process is repeated several times, the count value during each repetition may be stored in a different count variable. Then, during one of the repetitions, a sum of two or more count values may be compared to reference count values to determine a load level in the washing machine.

A device and method for controlling a washing machine detects an amount of eccentricity of a tub of the washing machine and determines whether the degree of eccentricity is acceptable. The degree of eccentricity is measured by causing the tub to rotate at a substantially constant speed, and counting the number of times that the rotational speed of the tub changes during a predetermined period of time. The device and method determine whether a degree of eccentricity is acceptable based a comparison of the determined degree of eccentricity to one or more of a plurality of predetermined eccentricity reference values, and based on a number of times that the determination has been made unsuccessfully. The eccentricity reference values are selected based on a compensated laundry volume level. The compensated laundry volume level, in turn, is based on a detected laundry volume level, and a laundry volume compensation index that represents the number of times that the determined eccentricity value of the tub exceeds a predetermined eccentricity value during a predetermined time period.
