Near field communication

An apparatus including a first conductive cover portion defining an interior surface and an exterior surface of the apparatus; an antenna element, connected to a feed point and arranged to operate in at least a first resonant frequency band; a conductive element, positioned between the interior surface of the first conductive cover portion and the antenna element, and arranged to couple with the first conductive cover portion, wherein the combination of the conductive element and the first conductive cover portion are operable in a second resonant frequency band, different to the first resonant frequency band and are arranged to be contactlessly fed by the antenna element.

Apparatus and method

An antenna () includes a patch antenna element () capacitively coupled to a load patch (). A switch () connects the load patch () to one of one or more strip lines (), each of which has a different length. Each strip lines causes the load patch () to have a different impedance, with one causing a short circuit, one causing an open circuit, and one causing an impedance in between these extremes. Different impedances of the load patch () cause different frequencies of operation of the antenna patch () by virtue of the capacitive coupling therebetween. The antenna () is thereby tuneable to three separate frequencies. Other frequency bands are unaffected by virtue of the location of the load patch () relative to the antenna patch (). By allowing tuning by way of controlling the impedance of the load patch (), the antenna arrangement can be made smaller than a corresponding passive antenna operable at the same frequencies. By using an N throw switch, N strip lines of different lengths can be connected, each giving rise to a different operating frequency.

Controllable antenna arrangement

An communication terminal for radio communication has an antenna including a PIFA structure being provided with a ground plane element, at least one radiating element, and feeding means for connecting a signal path from a transceiver of the terminal to said at least one radiating element. The antenna comprises a conducting plate element arranged to be substantially in parallel with said PIFA structure. The conducting plate element is electrically floating in relation to said at least one radiating element.
