A mechanism is provided for storing data files in a file system. The file system provides a plurality of reference data files, where each reference data file in the plurality of data files represents a group of similar data files. The mechanism creates a new data file and associated the new data file with one reference data file in the plurality of data files thus defining an associated reference data file of the plurality of reference data files. The mechanism informs the file system about the association of the new data file with the associated reference data file. The mechanism compresses the new data file using the associated reference data file thereby forming a compressed data file. The mechanism stores the compressed data file together with information about the association of the new data file with the associated reference data file.

Provided are a method, system, and computer program product for a local authorization extension to provide access authorization for a module to access a computing system. A memory stores information on a first validity range comprising position coordinates for a module seeking to access the computing system and a second validity range comprising position coordinates for a location authorization extension for a computing system. A determination is made of a first position signal from a first receiver of the module and of a second position signal from a second receiver of the location authorization module. Determinations are made as to whether the first position signal is within the first validity range and whether the second position signal is within the second validity range. The module is granted access to the computing system in response to determining that the first position signal is within the first validity range and the second position signal is within the second validity range.

In a data management system, examination of first data for malicious content by a malicious content scanner is initiated in response to a request to write first data to a data storage device. A method for cloud computing comprising collecting cloud computing node status information from a cloud computing node connected to the cloud computing network; collecting cloud computing service status information indicative of an attribute of a cloud computing service executed in the node; collecting environmental data sets from computing systems connected to a network connected to the cloud, each environmental data set corresponding to attribute values of the computing systems; building a group of computing systems; storing the node and cloud service status information, the environmental data sets, and the identical attribute value of each computing system in a database; and responsive to a request for characteristic data from one of the computing systems, selecting the respective characteristic data out of the status information and the environmental data sets in the database and sending the characteristic data over the cloud computing network and the network to the requesting computing system.

A system and associated method for managing data. Each pointer of at least one pointer is stored in a metadata object. The pointer resides in a first repository, each unique file resides in a second repository, and the metadata object resides in third repository. Each pointer is deleted from the first repository. Upon receipt from the first repository of an event indicating both a unique file and a pointer no longer resides in the first repository, the pointer is searched for in each metadata object residing in the third repository pertaining to a hierarchical metadata management system (HMMS). After searching and locating the pointer in a metadata object in the third repository, the pointer is restored to the first repository. A hierarchical storage management system (HSM) is notified that the pointer currently resides in the first repository thus allowing the HSM to retrieve the unique file from the second repository.

Automigration mechanisms having fuzzy-logic based automigration control mechanisms for implementing control schemes controlling start, stop and/or bandwidth of the automigration process are provided. The automigration control mechanisms read, into a memory of an automigration controller circuit, configuration parameters characterizing the hardware and software properties of the source storage and target storage, and that of the network connection between them. The mechanisms further derive fuzzy variables from the values of the input variables and of the configuration parameters. The mechanisms further provide a predetermined fuzzy function with the fuzzy variables, where the fuzzy function reflects the exhaustion level of the source executing the fuzzy function yielding a fuzzy result value. The mechanisms apply the fuzzy result value to one of the control schemes, yielding a control result. The mechanisms control the start, stop, and/or bandwidth of the automigration of data by aid of the control result.

A mechanism is provided for adaptively assigning of a plurality of data management application instances to a plurality of data objects. The mechanism determines a processing load for a plurality of data management application instances for performing a data management task based on history data being descriptive of the data objects which have been affected by previous data management tasks, each of the data management application instances being assigned to at least one sub-section of a tree being descriptive of a storage structure of the data objects by means of a set of separation points for each one of the data management application instances. The mechanism adapts the separation points in the tree for balancing the expected processing loads of the data management application instances for a future data management processing task.
