A number of flat tubes, flat tube heat exchangers, and methods of manufacturing both are described and illustrated. The flat tubes can be constructed of one, two, or more pieces of sheet material. A profiled insert integral with the flat tube or constructed from another sheet of material can be used to define multiple flow channels through the flat tube. The flat tubes can be constructed of relatively thin material, and can be reinforced with folds of the flat tube material and/or of an insert in areas subject to higher pressure and thermal stresses. Also, the relatively thin flat tube material can have a corrosion layer enabling the material to resist failure due to corrosion. Heat exchangers having such flat tubes connected to collection tubes are also disclosed, as are manners in which such tubes can be provided with fins.

Flat tube, flat tube heat exchanger, and method of manufacturing same

A system and method for producing flat tubes is described and illustrated. The flat tubes can be produced from at least one strip of endless band material having at least one wall part and an inner part formed with corrugations on a roller train provided with roller pairs, with the strip running in a longitudinal direction through the rollers and being shaped. The inner part of the flat tube can be formed with corrugations placed between the shaped wall parts, after which the closure of the flat tube is carried out. Production of the flat tubes can include forming spaced apart band thinning lines running in the longitudinal direction of the strip, and forming corrugation peaks and corrugation troughs at the band thinning lines.

Tubes and method and apparatus for producing tubes

A heat exchanger with a plurality of stacked flat tubes and a collecting tank having a wall extending around the entire periphery of, and connected to, the end of the stacked flat tubes. A first medium may be distributed through the collecting tank and flat tubes. Internal inserts are in the flat tubes, with the inserts being bonded between the broad sides of the tubes and, in the region of connection of the tubes to the collecting tank, being configured to compensate for length changes in the stacking direction caused by temperature changes, as by recesses in connectors such as wave flanks or by corrugated wave flanks. The flat tubes with inserts such as described may be separately provided for use in manufacture of heat exchangers.

Heat exchanger with flat tubes

A frame supports heat exchangers one in front of another in the direction of flow of cooling air, and includes two vertical walls interconnected by transverse walls, cross braces between the walls, and fastening points on the walls adapted to fasten the heat exchangers to the frame. Outwardly extending bulging sections in the vertical walls include an outer portion adapted to be secured to the vehicle support members to support the frame thereon, and an inner portion defining a space between vertical wall sections above and below the bulging section for receive projecting components of at least one heat exchanger. Connectors connect each of the fastening openings to the aligned flange openings, with the connectors including a head and a stem with an expandable end opposite the head retaining the connectors in the aligned openings. Hooks support the heat exchangers in the direction of air flow, with the connector stems supporting against at least some forces transverse to the direction of air flow.

Frame for multiple vehicle heat exchangers

The invention concerns a corrugated heat exchanger element () that can be produced from a metal strip and has a corrugation height (h) that lies between the crests () of the corrugations, in which the crests () form a first and second plane, consisting of several crests (), at least some of the crests () of each plane being connected to the heat exchanger walls (), and in which each crest () of the first plane is connected to the following crest () of the second plane by means of flanks (), and a flow channel () is formed between adjacent flanks (); structures (), whose direction of alignment () in one flank () intersects the direction of alignment () in the following flank (), are situated in the flanks (). In order to improve the efficiency of heat exchange, it is proposed in a first variant according to the invention that the elements of structures () be beads () or corrugations or the like that provide the flow channel with alternating constrictions () and widenings (), the adjacent flow channels () being essentially separated from each other in terms of flow. A second variant according to the invention proposes that the elements of the structures () be cuts () that connect the adjacent flow channels () together in terms of flow. A third variant prescribes that the elements of the structures be beads () or corrugations, in which cuts () lying in the direction of alignment () of the beads () or corrugations are arranged.

Corrugated heat exchange element

A plate heat exchanger that is provided with an internal insert located between plates that form a channel. The insert takes the form of an additional plate that has guide channels with at least one inlet and one outlet which lead from one flow channel of one medium to another flow channel of the same medium. Sections of the additional plate that are free of guide channels are metallically connected to an adjacent heat exchanger plate. The guide channels are metallically connected to the other adjacent heat exchanger plate of the same channel.
