A method of controlling a load at a wireless communication base station includes determining an indication of a maximum path loss between the base station and any high speed data users currently in a cell served by the base station. A target loading limit for the cell is set based upon the determined indication of the maximum path loss. In disclosed examples, the indication of the maximum path loss corresponds to a distance between a high speed user and a base station. Another factor considered in disclosed examples includes the data rate of such a high speed user.

Load control for wireless base station

An exemplary method of controlling communications that may include high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) traffic includes setting a first power limit below an allowable power limit. A second power limit is set that is below the first power limit. A determination is made whether there is any HSDPA traffic. The first power limit is selected for non-HSDPA traffic when there is no HSDPA traffic. The second power limit is selected for non-HSDPA traffic when there is HSDPA traffic.

Power overload control method useful with high speed downlink packet access

The present invention relates to a method for transmitting of data frames from user equipment to a base station in a wireless telecommunication network. The method comprises an error control step adapted to retransmit the data frame from the user equipment to the base station, if the received data frame contains errors or if no acknowledge message is received by the user equipment within a predetermined amount of time. The method further comprises a transmission power control step adapted to control a transmission power of the data frames in such a way that the number of retransmissions corresponds to a predetermined number of target retransmission. The number of target retransmission is adapted depending on the traffic load and/or the number of users connected to the base station.

Adaptive HARQ control for EDCH

Methods of providing power overload control in a communication system having a least one base station serving one or more users of at least one cell are described which may avoid an overload condition in the system. In one aspect, a target signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) may be controlled for inner loop power control implemented by the base station, so as to maintain the loading of the communication system below an overload condition. In another aspect, a target block error rate (BLER) may be controlled for outer loop power control implemented by the base station, so as to maintain the loading of communication system below an overload condition.

Embodiments provided include a method for transmitting a packet to a receiver over primary and supplemental channels in a wireless communication network. Indications of a primary code and a set of N supplemental codes assigned to the receiver are communicated over a control channel. When it is determined that a packet should be transmitted over a supplemental channel, a first portion of the packet and a supplemental channel indicator are transmitted over a same single packet transmission time interval on the primary channel and a second portion of the packet is transmitted over the same single packet transmission time interval on the supplemental channel corresponding to the supplemental channel indicator. The supplemental channel uses an assigned specific supplemental code belonging to the set of N supplemental codes assigned to the receiver. When the packet should not be transmitted over a supplemental channel, the packet is transmitted over the primary channel.

An exemplary method of controlling communications that may include enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) traffic includes setting a total uplink power limit below an allowable power limit. A minimum amount of uplink resources is allocated to each user requesting E-DCH service on an individual user basis such that a cumulative E-DCH power allocation satisfies a selected minimum E-DCH power allocation threshold. A determination whether to grant a non-E-DCH service request is made based upon a relationship between the current total uplink power and the total uplink power limit and a relationship between the selected minimum E-DCH power allocation threshold and a current cumulative E-DCH power.

Power overload control method useful with enhanced dedicated channel traffic

A technique is disclosed for determining values of different portions of a total uplink interference, which can be used for scheduling and load control at a base station, for example. A disclosed example includes obtaining measurements from individual users and using those measurements to determine corresponding portions of a total uplink interference at the base station. One portion is associated with users that are controlled by a scheduler for that base station. Another portion is associated with users that are not controlled by that scheduler. Determining each of the portions individually and using a received total wideband power measurement allows for determining each of the major portions of the total uplink interference at a base station.

Packet ordering method and apparatus in a mobile communication network employing hierarchical routing with data packet forwarding

The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for assigning a channel in response to a request for service for a mobile station in a wireless communication network serving a plurality of regions, such as cells in a digital cellular network. The mobile station may be located in one of the plurality of regions. The method comprises determining a first indication of congestion on a forward access channel and a second indication of congestion on a random access channel and assigning at least one channel of a plurality of channels to the mobile station based on the determined first and second indications of congestion. Based on the first indication of congestion, a first threshold may be adjusted for the forward access channel and a second threshold may be adjusted based on the second indication of congestion on the random access channel. A service type of the request for service and a condition of wireless communication environment may be determined for transmission of data over the wireless communication network and to decide if a specific signaling connection for the mobile station located in one of plurality of regions shall be established in a particular mobile station state including a cell dedicated channel state and a cell forward access channel state based on the service type and the condition of wireless communication environment. In this manner, signaling requests, such as radio resource control signaling requests may be classified into different service types and different radio frequency environment conditions, providing an efficient packet data transmission in a wireless communication system by deciding which state to use under different scenarios. By including a wireless communication environment condition, such as the current radio frequency environment status in a channel assignment decision making, a signaling connection may not experience an inferior quality and may avoid a delay and occurrences of dropped connections.
