A spring counterbalanced arm assembly including a base member, a lower arm, an upper arm, a knee bearing member and object supporting means. The lower arm has an elongated, generally tubular member defining an elongated cavity therein. The base end of the tubular member includes means defining a forwardly extending bracket and has pivot means thereon positioned forwardly of an exterior front wall of the tubular member for pivotally connecting the base end bracket of the lower arm to the base member at a first pivot axis of the base member. The knee end of the tubular member includes a forwardly extending bracket having pivot means thereon positioned forwardly of the exterior front wall for pivotally connecting the knee end of the lower arm to a knee end of an upper arm and to the knee bearing member at a first pivot axis of the knee bearing member. The lower arm includes a slider and tension spring enclosed within it to provide counterbalancing force. The lower arm assembly also includes an elongated stay arm substantially completely enclosed within the elongated cavity of the lower arm. The stay arm is pivotally connected to the knee bearing member and to the base member so as to form a parallelogram mechanism. The counterbalanced arm assembly also includes an upper arm assembly having a generally tubular member defining an elongated cavity therein, and an extensible tension spring and slider for providing counterbalancing force by means of linkage means between the knee bearing member and the slider.

Magnifying lamp

An asymmetric lamp with an improved reflector assembly is disclosed. The lamp includes a head, a socket for receiving a light bulb, and a front reflector. The socket and the front reflector are mounted in the head. When the light bulb is inserted into the socket, the light bulb defines a transverse axis. The front reflector has a longitudinal cross-sectional shape that is either generally hyperbolic, generally parabolic, or generally elliptic. The front reflector is formed from a plurality of triangular facets. Adjacent facets define a line that is nonparallel to the transverse axis defined by the light bulb. The front reflector is mounted in the head so that the rear edge of the front reflector is positioned proximate the top of the light bulb. The lamp may include a back reflector, preferably made from a nonconductive material. The back reflector is positioned proximate the rear edge of the front reflector. The back reflector may have rounded upper and lower portions, which conform to the rounded top and bottom sections of the light bulb. The lower portion of the back reflector may extend forward of the bottom of the light bulb, and a notch may be formed in the lower portion of the back reflector. One or more louver strips may be located at the front edge of the front reflector.

Asymmetric lamp

An electric lamp which provides substantially uniform lighting throughout a work area. The area extends from directly under the lamp a substantial distance beyond the shade. A faceted reflector provides the desired distribution of the light.

Lamp

An equapoised arm assembly is counterbalanced by springs enclosed within tubes that are components of the arm assembly. The arm assembly has a lower pair of parallel arms which are pivoted at their lower ends to a swivel bracket that turns about a vertical axis in a fixed bracket. Each of these arms is pivoted at its upper end to a floating bracket that is pivoted to a similar upper pair of parallel arms. An article support bracket is mounted upon the other end of the upper pair of arms and may include a universal joint assembly. The arms are tubular and each pair forms a parallelogram by virtue of the pivotal connections with the respective brackets. A coil spring is enclosed within one arm of each pair of arms to exert a counterbalancing effect upon its pair of arms. A nylon shoe is connected to at least one end of each spring and is slidable within the tube. The shoe is connected through a rod to an adjacent bracket of the assembly to transmit the counterbalacing force from the spring to the adjacent bracket. By connecting a shoe and rod to both ends of the spring, it is stretched from both these ends whereby its counterbalancing force is doubled. This force is a function of the tangent of the angle between the direction of the spring force (i.e. the longitudinal axis of the tube it is in) and the connection(s) between the slide and bracket, whereby the actual spring force may be smaller than that used to produce the same counterbalancing force in prior equapoised arm assemblies.

Counterbalanced arm

An equapoised lamp comprising a lamp head mounted upon an arm assembly which is counterbalanced by springs enclosed within square tubes which are components of the arm assembly. The arm assembly has a lower pair of parallel arms which are pivoted at their lower ends to a swivel bracket which turns about a vertical axis in a fixed bracket. Each of those arms is pivoted at its upper end to a floating bracket which has pivoted to it a similar upper pair of parallel arms. A lamp assembly is mounted upon the other end of the upper pair of arms by a universal joint assembly. The arms are tubular, and each pair forms a parallelogram by virtue of the pivotal connections with the respective brackets. A coil spring is enclosed within one of each pair of tubes which exerts a counterbalancing effect upon its pair of arms. A nylon shoe is mounted upon the free end of each spring and enclosed within the tube. The shoe transmits the counterbalancing force from the spring to the adjacent bracket.
