A poly(arylene sulfide) composition containing an aromatic sulfone polymer and reinforcing material is provided for molding large articles free of internal cracks. The inventive composition optionally contains a high molecular weight polyphenylene sulfide, a reinforcing material such as glass fibers and a sulfone polymer containing at least one recurring aliphatic group in the polymer chain.

Electronic components can be encapsulated with a poly(arylene sulfide) composition containing a mercaptosilane such as, for example, 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane.

Compositions comprising a poly(arylene sulfide) which crystallizes to a fine-grained crystalline morphology are provided. Glass-filled poly(arylene sulfide) compositions containing organosilanes

Poly(arylene sulfide) compositions are pigmented with black carbonaceous pigments selected from at least one of finely divided bituminious coal, carbonized rice hulls, bone blacks, and micropulverized petroleum coke in an amount sufficient to provide the black pigmentation desired with little or no deleterious effect on the mechanical properties such as flexural and tensile strengths of the resin.

Glass-filled polyarylene sulfide compositions containing organosilanes

The hydrolytic stability of glass-containing poly(arylene sulfide) compositions can be improved by the addition of a fatty acid such as stearic acid. Optionally, the stearic acid can be employed in combination with certain organosilanes such as N-vinylbenzyl-N-2-(trimethoxysilylpropylamino)ethylammonium chloride or mercaptosilanes.

A composition suitable for molding applications containing from about 30 to about 50 weight percent poly(arylene sulfide), about 10 to about 30 weight percent glass fibers, about 30 to about 60 weight percent of a component chosen from glass beads, fused silica and mixtures thereof, from about 0 to about 3 weight percent colorant, and from about 0.5 to about 2 weight percent of a processing aid chosen from among N,N'-alkylenebis(alkanamides), glycerides and phosphated glycerides of saturated fatty acids containing from 10 to 30 carbon atoms, mono- and dialkanolamides derived from saturated fatty acids and esters derived from a saturated long-chained fatty acid and long-chained saturated aliphatic alcohol. A method for improving processability of a composition containing from about 30 to about 50 weight percent poly(arylene sulfide), from about 10 to about 30 weight percent glass fibers, from about 30 to about 60 weight percent of a component chosen from glass beads, fused silica and combinations thereof and from 0 to about 3 weight percent colorant in which there is admixed with this composition a processing aid in the amount of about 0.5 to about 2 weight percent with the processing aid chosen from N,N'-alkylenebis(alklanamides), glycerides and phosphated glycerides of saturated fatty acids containing from 10 to 30 carbon atoms, mono- and dialkanolamides derived from saturated fatty acids and esters derived from a saturated long-chained fatty acid and long-chained saturated aliphatic alcohol.

Organosilane antistatic agents for glass-filled polyarylene sulfides

A method for coating arylene sulfide polymers onto substrates by applying to the surface of the substrate a sufficient amount of a compound that acts as an aid in obtaining a smooth surface of arylene sulfide polymer over the substrate, applying a sufficient amount of arylene sulfide polymer to form a surface coating, and raising the temperature of the coated surface sufficiently to cure the coating of arylene sulfide polymer. In one embodiment, the compound acting as an aid in obtaining a smooth surface is applied as a film over the substrate surface and this film is overcoated with poly(arylene sulfide). In another embodiment, the aid for obtaining a smooth surface is applied over the substrate as part of a powdered mixture containing both the compound and powdered poly(arylene sulfide).
