The invention relates to 1-phenylpyrazole derivatives of formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and X are as defined in the description, and to their use as insecticides.

Pyrazole, pyrrole and imidazole derivatives having formula (I) or (II): ##STR1## wherein .dbd.X is .dbd.NR.sup.3, .dbd.O or an electron pair and Q comprises certain pyrazole, pyrrole and imidazole structures which, together with the remaining substituents, are defined in the description, are useful for controlling arthropod, nematodes, helminth or protozoan pests.

The invention describes novel 1-aryl-5-(substituted alkyl (thio)amido)pyrazoles wherein preferred compounds are of the formula ##STR1## wherein: R.sup.2 is R.sup.11 S(O).sub.n in which n is 0, 1 or 2 and R.sup.11 is alkyl, preferably methyl; or haloalkyl, preferably trihalomethyl or dihalomethyl; and in which halo is F, Cl or Br or combinations thereof and most preferably CF.sub.3, CCl.sub.3, CF.sub.2 Cl, CFCl.sub.2, CF.sub.2 Br, CHF.sub.2, CHClF or CHCl.sub.2 ;

The invention describes novel 1-(2-pyridyl)pyrazoles of formula (I) ##STR1## wherein typically preferred substituents are: X is S(O).sub.n R.sub.1, in which R.sub.1 is an alkyl group, preferably a methyl group, which is fully substituted by halogen atoms, and n is 0, 1 and 2;
