Coating including silica based material with pendent functional groups

A method of coating a surface of a fuel cell plate is disclosed herein, and involves forming a sol gel mixture by mixing a weak acid and a composition including at least two metal oxide precursors. One of the metal oxide precursors is configured to be hydrolyzed by the weak acid to form a mixed metal oxide framework with an other of the metal oxide precursors having at least one organic functional group that is not hydrolyzed by the weak acid. The mixture is applied to the surface, and is condensed by exposure to air at least one predetermined temperature and for a predetermined time. The sol gel mixture is immersed in water at a predetermined temperature and for a predetermined time to form a porous, hydrophilic, and conductive film on the surface.

Method of coating a surface of a fuel cell plate

A method of coating a surface of a fuel cell plate is disclosed herein. The method involves forming a sol gel mixture including a metal oxide modified with at least one functional group, where the at least one functional group is configured to improve adhesion; and adding carbon modified with a hydrophilic functional group to the mixture, thereby forming a suspension. The suspension is applied to the surface of the fuel cell plate, and is activated to form a porous, hydrophilic, and conductive film on the surface of the fuel cell plate.

A flow control valve for a fuel cell that has particular application for controlling the flow of cathode air through a cathode flow channel of the fuel cell. The valve includes an element that controls the flow through the flow channel in response to changes in the voltage potential of the fuel cell. The valve includes a shape memory alloy wire and a flow control element secured to both ends of the shape memory alloy wire. The ends of the wire are also coupled to the anode and cathode of the fuel cell. When no current is flowing through the wire, the flow control element holds the wire in a pre-strained condition. If the voltage generated by the fuel cell increases, the current passing through the wire will heat the wire and cause it to shrink or contract which forces the flow control element into the flow path.

A method for making a part, the method comprising: (a) providing an uncured upper layer on a part, a substrate, a workpiece, a support platform, or a base layer, wherein the uncured upper layer comprises resin and also comprises fibers, particles, powder, and/or electronic devices; (b) optionally providing a new uncured upper layer on the uncured upper layer provided in step (a), whereby the uncured upper layer provided in step (a) becomes an uncured lower layer, and wherein the new uncured upper layer comprises resin and also comprises fibers, particles, powder, and/or electronic devices; (c) curing the uncured upper layer and/or the uncured lower layer after step (b) using an electron beam; (d) after step (c), providing a new uncured upper layer on the cured or uncured upper layer, whereby the cured or uncured upper layer becomes a cured or uncured lower layer, and wherein the new uncured upper layer comprises resin and also comprises fibers, particles, powder, and/or electronic devices; (e) optionally curing the lower layer resulting from step (d) if the lower layer is uncured to yield a cured lower layer; (f) after step (e), optionally providing a new uncured upper layer on the uncured upper layer provided in step (d), whereby the uncured upper layer provided in step (d) becomes an uncured lower layer, and wherein the new uncured upper layer comprises resin and also comprises fibers, particles, powder, and/or electronic devices; (g) after step (f) curing the uncured upper layer and/or the uncured lower layer(s) after step (f) using an electron beam; and (h) optionally repeating steps (d) through (g) a number of times to form a desired number of cured layers.

Preparing composites by using resins

A sensor for determining the presence of hydrogen and for measuring the amount of hydrogen present in the vicinity of the sensor. The sensor comprises a metal hydride hydrogen-absorbent material AB which selectively absorbs hydrogen and expands upon such absorption. This expansion depends on the amount of hydrogen absorbed and the expansion is detected and measured either by measurement of a change in capacitance of the sensor or by the change in tunnel current flowing through the sensor. A method for determining the presence of hydrogen and for measuring the amount of hydrogen present using the metal hydride hydrogen-absorbent material AB -based sensor.

Thin film metal hydride hydrogen sensor

An epitaxial structure suitable for use in a light-emitting device having at least one operating frequency in the visible range, and a method for providing the same. The epitaxial structure includes a semiconductor substrate which is transparent at the operating frequency, an output mirror lattice-matched to the substrate and comprising at least one pair of semiconductor layers having substantially different refractive indices and an active region lattice-matched to the substrate and having a bandgap narrower than the bandgap of the output mirror.

Chemically-etched and or sputtered CdTe surfaces are exposed to UV excimer laser radiation at a fluence ranging from about 15 to 75 mJ/cm.sup.2, followed by either a low temperature (&lt;300.degree. C.) thermal anneal or exposure of the CdTe surface to UV excimer laser radiation at a fluence lower than the threshold fluence. This procedure provides clean, stoichiometric, and well-ordered CdTe surfaces.

Production of clean, well-ordered CdTe surfaces using laser ablation

A metalorganic arsenic source comprising R.sub.3-m AsH.sub.m, where R is an organic radical selected from the group consisting of C.sub.n H.sub.2n+1 and C.sub.n H.sub.2n-1, where n ranges from 1 to 6, and where m is 1 or 2, such as tert-butylarsine (t-BuAsH.sub.2), is useful in terminating a silicon surface with arsenic without carbon contamination, thereby permitting subsequent growth of high quality ZnSe. Use of this metalorganic arsenic source allows the full potential of the metalorganic molecular beam epitaxy (MOMBE) deposition technique, which has demonstrated superior flux control than that achieved by MBE, to be realized in the heteroepitaxy of HgCdTe on silicon substrates. Other metalorganic deposition procedures, such as MOVPE, may also be employed in the practice of the invention.

A microchannel plate array assembly (10), comprising an array of microchannels in a microchannel plate (24), is provided in place of a conventional effusion cell to attain high and uniform fluxes localized in the substrate area for the growth of films thereon by gas source molecular beam epitaxy. Using this approach, an effective pressure at the substrate can be sustained which is as much as 100 times greater than the background pressure in the growth chamber.

Multichannel plate assembly for gas source molecular beam epitaxy

A pulsed beam from an excimer laser is used for precision ablation of cadmium telluride (CdTe) and other materials to fabricate and delineate devices in electronic microcircuit structures. The fluence of the beam may be adjusted to selectively remove one constituent of the material, such as cadmium vs. tellurium, at a higher rate than the other constituent, while maintaining the integrity of the material surface. The beam may selectively remove an epitaxial layer of CdTe, CdZnTe, or HgCdTe from a GaAs substrate. The beam may be directed through a projection mask and optical system onto a material to form an image for patterned ablation. The optical system may focus an image of the mask on the material to form vertical sidewall patterns, or slightly defocus the image to form curved sidewall patterns and/or concave and convex lens structures for optical arrays.
