A process for extracting from aqueous solution the alkali metal or ammonium salt of a phenol, naphthol, anthrol or phenanthrol or the corresponding thiol, which comprises contacting an aqueous alkaline or neutral solution of the alkali metal or ammonium salt, in which is dissolved an alkali metal or ammonium fluoride, chloride, bromide, hydroxide, nitrate, nitrite, sulphate, sulphite, sulphide, thiosulphate, phosphate, hydrogen phosphate, carbonate, bicarbonate, cyanate, cyanide, thiocyanate, borate, chlorate, chlorite, hypochlorite, perchlorate, chromate, dichromate or permanganate, with a partially water-miscible organic solvent so as to transfer aqueous solution of the alkali metal or ammonium salt of the phenol, naphthol, anthrol or phenanthrol or corresponding thiol into the solvent while retaining separate aqueous and solvent phases, and thereafter separating the solvent phase containing the alkali metal or ammonium salt and water from the aqueous phase, the ratio of solvent to water in the separated solvent phase being from 0.5:1 to 10:1 w/w.

Chemical process

A process for extracting from aqueous solution the alkali metal or calcium salt of a halo or haloalkyl substituted 2-hydroxypyridine, or a 2-hydroxyquinoline or 2-hydroxybenzothiazole which comprises contacting an aqueous alkaline or neutral solution of the alkali metal or calcium salt, in which is dissolved an alkali metal fluoride, chloride, bromide, hydroxide, sulphate, sulphite, cyanate, cyanide, thiocyanate, thiosulphate, sulphide, phosphate, hydrogen phosphate, carbonate, bicarbonate, borate, chlorate, hypochlorite, perchlorate, nitrite, chromate, dichromate or permanganate or calcium chloride, bromide, nitrate, nitrite, chlorate, hypochlorite, perchlorate, thiocyanate, thiosulphate, chromate, dichtromate or permanganate, with a partially water-miscible organic solvent so as to transfer aqueous solution of the alkali metal or calcium salt of the 2-hydroxypyridine, 2-hydroxyquinoline or 2-hydroxybenzothiasole into the solvent whilst retaining separate aqueous and solvent phases, and thereafter separating the solvent phase containing the alkali metal or calcium salt and water from the aqueous phase, the ratio of solvent to water in the separated solvent phase being from 0.5:1 to 10:1 w/w.

Chemical process for the extraction of 2-hydroxy pyridine derivatives, 2-hydroxyquinoline, and 2-hydroxybenzothiazole

A process for the preparation of 3-isochromanone which comprises contacting an o-xylene-&#x3b1;,&#x3b1;'-dihalide with carbon monoxide, in the presence of a catalyst and a hindered amine base in a liquid medium comprising water and a tertiary alcohol.

Process for preparing 3-isochromanone

3-Isochromanone is prepared by contacting an o-xylene-&agr;,&agr;&prime;-dihalide with carbon monoxide in a two-phase liquid medium, in which one phase is aqueous and the other phase is water-immiscible, in the presence of a catalyst and a hindered amine base.

A process for the preparation of 2-hydroxy-6-trifluoromethylpyridine which comprises reacting 2-fluoro-6-trifluomethylpyridine or a mixture of 2-fluoro-6-trifluoromethylpyridine and 2-chloro-6-trifluoromethylpyridine with an alkali metal hydroxide at a temperature of from 50.degree. C. to 160.degree. C. and acidifying the product so formed.
