A titanium based carbonitride alloy containing Ti, Nb, Ta, W, C, N and Co, contains:

Cermet

An &#x3b1;-AlOcoated cutting tool insert combining a cemented carbide with a binder phase enriched surface zone and a textured &#x3b1;-AlO-layer is disclosed. The &#x3b1;-AlOlayer has a thickness ranging from about 2-9 &#x3bc;m and is composed of columnar grains having a length/width ratio from about 2-12. It is characterized by a strong (104) growth texture and by low intensity of the (012), (110) and (113) diffraction peaks. The textured &#x3b1;-AlOis preferably deposited on an MTCVD Ti(C,N) layer having a thickness from about 2-10 &#x3bc;m. When the alumina layer is the uppermost layer, it may be wet-blasted to an Rvalue of &#x3c;about 1 &#x3bc;m, giving the tool a black and shiny appearance.

Alumina coated grade

A cutting tool insert is formed from a cemented carbide body and a coating particularly useful in medium-rough to rough turning of stainless-steels and superalloys. The cemented carbide body is formed from cemented carbide with a composition of 7.0-12.0 wt-% Co, 5.0-11.0 wt-% cubic carbide forming metals from group IVb, Vb and VIb of the periodic table, preferably Ti, Nb and Ta, and balance WC with a 10-30 &#x3bc;m essentially cubic carbide phase free and binder phase enriched surface zone. The coating includes an MTCVD Ti(C,N) as the first layer adjacent the body having a thickness of from &#x3e;2.5 to 7.0 &#x3bc;m, on top of which an &#x3b1;AlOlayer is present, with a thickness of between 2.0 and 5.0 &#x3bc;m, and a total thickness of the coating of between 5.5 and 9.5 &#x3bc;m. The alumina layer has a (006) texture.

Coated cutting tool for medium-rough to rough turning of stainless steels and superalloys

The present invention relates to a cutting tool insert comprising a cemented carbide body and a coating particularly useful in fine to medium-rough turning of stainless-steels. The cemented carbide body consists of a cemented carbide with a composition of 5.0-9.0 wt-% Co, 5.0-11.0 wt-% cubic carbide forming metals from group IVb, Vb and VIb of the periodic table, preferably Ti, Nb and Ta, and balance WC with a 10-30 &#x3bc;m essentially cubic carbide phase free and binder phase enriched surface zone. The coating comprises an MTCVD Ti(C7N) as the first layer adjacent the body having a thickness of from 2.5 to 7.0 &#x3bc;m, on top of which an &#x3b1;-AlOlayer is present, with a thickness of between 2.0 and 5.0 &#x3bc;m, and a total thickness of the coating between 5.5 and 9.5 &#x3bc;m. The alumina layer has a (006) texture.

Coated cutting tool for fine to medium-rough turning of stainless steels

The present invention concerns a cutting tool insert for turning of steel at high cutting speeds. The cutting tool insert comprises a (006) textured &#x3b1;-AlOcoated cemented carbide grade. The cemented carbide body has about 4.5-6.5 wt-% Co and about 3-10 wt-% cubic carbide forming metals and an S-value of about 0.77-0.92 and a coercivity of about 10-20 kA/m. The &#x3b1;-AlOlayer has a thickness ranging from about 7 to 12 &#x3bc;m and is composed of columnar grains having a length/width ratio from about 2 to 12 and is deposited on an MTCVD Ti(C,N) layer having a thickness from about 4 to 12 &#x3bc;m. The alumina layer is characterized by a pronounced (006) growth texture. The alumina layer is the uppermost layer and is wet-blasted having an Rvalue of less than 1 &#x3bc;m, giving the tool a black and shiny appearance.

Coated cutting tool

A cutting tool insert includes a cemented carbide substrate and a coating. The cemented carbide substrate comprises WC, 4-7 wt % cobalt, 6-9 wt % cubic carbide forming metals from the groups IVB and VB, preferably titanium, tantalum and niobium, with a binder phase enriched surface zone with a thickness of &#x3e;20 &#x3bc;m, preferably between 21 and 50 &#x3bc;m. The coating comprises a first layer adjacent the cemented carbide substrate of Ti(C,N) having a thickness of from about 3 to about 15 &#x3bc;m, an alumina layer adjacent said first layer having a thickness of from about 3 to about 15 &#x3bc;m, said alumina layer being composed of &#x3b1;-AlO, a further layer adjacent the alumina layer of a Ti(C,N) or Ti(C,O,N) having a thickness of from about 1 to 10 &#x3bc;m. The total thickness of the coating being less than 30 &#x3bc;m, preferably less than 20 &#x3bc;m. Inserts according to the invention exhibit favourable wear resistance and edge strength when turning steel.

Coated cutting tool for turning of steel

A cutting tool insert includes a cemented carbide substrate and a coating. The cemented carbide substrate comprises WC, 4&#x2013;7 wt % cobalt, 6&#x2013;9 wt % cubic carbide forming metals from the groups IVB and VB, preferably titanium, tantalum and niobium, with a binder phase enriched surface zone with a thickness of &#x3e;20 &#x3bc;m, preferably between 21 and 50 &#x3bc;m. The coating comprises a first layer adjacent the cemented carbide substrate of Ti(C,N) having a thickness of from about 3 to about 15 &#x3bc;m, an alumina layer adjacent said first layer having a thickness of from about 3 to about 15 &#x3bc;m, said alumina layer being composed of &#x3b1;-AlO, a further layer adjacent the alumina layer of a Ti(C,N) or Ti(C,O,N) having a thickness of from about 1 to 10 &#x3bc;m. The total thickness of the coating being less than 30 &#x3bc;m, preferably less than 20 &#x3bc;m. Inserts according to the invention exhibit favourable wear resistance and edge strength when turning steel.

A cutting tool insert with a cemented carbide and a coating. The cemented carbide substrate includes WC, 7 to 12 wt-% Co, 5 to 11 wt-% cubic carbides of metals from the groups IVb, Vb and VIb with a binder phase that is highly alloyed with cobalt. The tungsten carbide phase has a mean intercept length of 0.7 to 1.4 &#x3bc;m. The coating includes at least one 2 to 12 &#x3bc;m thick &#x3b1;-AlOlayer composed of columnar grains with texture coefficients: TC(012)&#x3e;2.2 and TC(024)&#x3e;0.6&#xd7;TC(012).

Coated cutting insert for rough turning

The present invention concerns a coated cemented carbide cutting tool insert particularly useful for turning of cast irons. The cutting tool insert is characterized by a cemented carbide body comprising WC, cubic carbonitrides, a W-alloyed Co binder phase, a surface zone of the cemented carbide body that is binder phase enriched and nearly free of cubic carbonitride phase, and a coating including an innermost layer of TiCNOwith equiaxed grains, a layer of TiCNOwith columnar grains and at least one layer of AlO.

Coated cutting tool insert for machining of cast irons

The present invention relates to a coated cemented carbide cutting tool insert particularly useful for turning of cast irons but also low alloyed steels at mediate to high cutting speeds. The cutting tool insert is characterised by a cemented carbide body comprising WC, cubic carbonitrides, a W-alloyed Co binder phase, a surface zone of the cemented carbide body that is binder phase enriched and nearly free of cubic carbonitride phase, and a coating including an innermost layer of TiCNOwith equiaxed grains, a layer of TiCNOwith columnar grains and at least one layer of AlO.

Coated cutting tool insert

A cutting tool insert has a cemented carbide substrate and a coating. The cemented carbide substrate includes 73-93 wt % WC, 4-12 wt % binder phase, and cubic carbide phase with a binder phase enriched surface zone essentially free of cubic carbide phase. The cubic carbide phase includes elements from the groups IVB and VB, with the Ta content on a level corresponding to a technical impurity. Inserts according to the invention exhibit favorable edge strength and thermal shock resistance.
