A rapid immunoassay method and apparatus for detecting foot and mouth disease virus are disclosed. The method and test device permit pen-side testing of animals and provide test results within a relatively short time period. In a preferred embodiment, the method and apparatus provide a means for differentiating between FMDV-infected and FMDV-vaccinated animals.

Method and devices for rapid diagnosis of foot-and-mouth disease

A collection and testing cup for fluid characterization is disclosed. The cup has a lid assembly with a tamper evident closure; a cylinder that extends into the fluid in the collection cup, also with a tamper evident closure; a piston with a conduit and one-way valve through which a portion of the fluid can be forced into an isolation chamber separate from the main collection cup for testing. The lid assembly cylinder is configured with an aperture or passage near the bottom of the cylinder to allow a small portion of fluid to enter the lower portion of the cylinder from the collection cup chamber and a piston with a central conduit and valve initially positioned near the top of the cylinder adjacent to the lid. The piston, when pushed down the cylinder, closes the aperture communicating with collection cup chamber and forces a predetermined volume of fluid from the lower portion of the cylinder through the conduit and valve to the upper portion of the cylinder, isolating a portion of the fluid sample from the fluid in the collection cup chamber. The valve prevents the fluid from returning to the lower portion of the cylinder and to the collection cup chamber. A testing device may be inserted into the fluid sample at the upper portion of the piston for characterization of one or more analytes in the fluid sample.

Disclosed herein is an apparatus for generating a spinning cold plasma. A preferred embodiment of the spinning cold plasma apparatus is portable and includes a vortex tube having an inner wall to form a vortex reaction chamber. The vortex tube preferably has a cold gas outlet formed at a first end of the vortex tube and a hot gas outlet formed at a second end of the vortex tube. The vortex tube preferably has a plurality of gas inlet openings formed therein for directing pressurized gas tangentially to the inner wall into the vortex reaction chamber. A preferred embodiment of the portable spinning cold plasma apparatus also includes a valve positioned at least partially within the cold gas outlet and a valve positioned at least partially within the hot gas outlet. The portable device preferably also includes an ionizing device, such as an RF source or microwave source, for transmitting electromagnetic energy into the vortex reaction chamber to ionize pressurized gas therein. Additional apparatus and methods are also disclosed herein.

The invention pertains to dipstick immunoassay devices. The device comprises a base member and a single, combined sample contact zone and test zone, wherein the test zone incorporates the use of symbols to detect analytes in a sample of biological fluid. A first immunological component, an anti-immunoglobulin capable of binding to an enzyme-labeled antibody, is immobilized in a control indicia portion. A second immunological component, capable of specifically binding to a target analyte which is bound to the enzyme-labeled antibody to form a sandwich complex, is immobilized in a test indicia portion. The enzyme-labeled antibody produces a visual color differential between a control indicia portion and a non-indicia portion in the test zone upon contact with a substrate. The device additionally includes a first polyol and a color differential enhancing component selected from the group consisting of an inhibitor to the enzyme and a competitive secondary substrate for the enzyme distributed throughout the non-indicia portion of the test zone.
