A dogging mechanism for a bulkhead door on a ship, which uses a rotatable handle connected to a four bar parallel linkage to pivot a plurality of rollers over a plurality of wedge shaped lugs to tightly close the door and make it water tight when used with a double directional gasket.

A water tight prehung door for a ship bulkhead, the door being formed from a plate with a peripheral band welded thereto, being stiffened by a plurality of channels extending from one side of the door to the other and having elongated dimples in the plate disposed between the channels; a double directional gasket which buckles when closed is contained in a partial enclosure and cooperates with a dogging mechanism utilizing a parallel bar linkage which moves rollers over wedge shaped lugs to dog the door closed and form a water tight seal irrespective of which side of the door is subjected to pressure.

A double directional gasket which, when contained within a partial enclosure, forms a double directional seal under low sealing forces due to the toggle like action of the relatively thin central portion of the gasket loading the seating area generally 90 degrees to the pressure loading on the relatively thin central portion.

A gas insulated transmission line has an inner conductor supported by insulators including a fixed insulator and a movable insulator with each having recesses in their outer portion having recessed metallic inserts therein of like configuration. The fixed insulator has disposed within the insert a base of an interconnection strap that extends along the sheath and is welded thereto. An insulating standoff button is further provided on the exterior of the base of the interconnection strap and presses against the outer sheath. An insert of the movable insulator contains a roller assembly. Preferably the roller assembly includes a substantially cylindrical roller of a semi-rigid insulating material that has edges bearing against the outer sheath and conforming to the configuration of the outer sheath by reason of deformation under load.

A segmented inner conductor of a transmission line has joints between the segments with a plug on one segment fitting into a socket on an adjacent segment. An electrostatic shield covers the joint and confines particles. Particular features have to do with simplifying the parts and their means of assembly for speed and economy including a plug end having a stop configured for easy assembly with the main portion of an inner conductor segment, a shield with a folded under portion over a bond joining the plug end to the inner segment main portion, spring loaded contacts holding the shield to the plug end, and use of a retaining ring, without bonding, to secure a ring of contact fingers to a socket end.

An insulator for supporting the inner conductor of a gas insulated transmission line is configured so that its outer extremity is a simple blunt portion that fits loosely within a bearing block of insulating material of lower dielectric constant than the insulator itself so as to provide structural simplicity and improved performance through lessened breakdown susceptibility. A cylindrical particle trap ring formed of flexible metal sheet material is attached to the bearing block at locations spaced from the insulator.

An actuator for an electrical circuit interrupter has a power cylinder for operating the circuit interrupter from a high pressure gas flow provided by a gas generating power unit which is a shotgun type shell container filled with a propellant. The propellant is characterized as being composed of spherical nitrocellulose grains having a nitroglycerin content; it is essentially free of deterrent coating and may have a granulation of 0.038/0.020 inches diameter range. Two suitable types are WC 630 or WC 615 manufactured by Olin Corporation of East Alton, Ill.

A telescoping contact assembly for high current applications includes a center conductor and a coaxial contact sheath assembly. The contact sheath assembly comprises a plurality of spring-loaded elongated contact fingers arranged about the inner circumference of a cylindrical housing. Each spring is loaded so as to create a spring force directed along the length of each contact finger in an axial direction with respect to the housing. Each contact finger is urged against a surface of the housing at a point of contact offset from the line of action of the spring force, thereby producing a radial force component creating contact pressure between each finger contact and the housing, and between each finger contact and the inserted center conductor.

High current contact

A disconnect switch and grounding apparatus therefor particularly adapted for use in gas insulated substations. The disconnect switch comprises a chamber having a pair of electrical conductors entering the chamber. Supporting the conductors and insulating them from contact with the chamber itself are insulators, which may be sealingly placed so as to prohibit the escape of the gas. A fixed contact member electrically attached to the first of the pair of conductors and a movable contact member is electrically attached to the second pair of conductors. A movement mechanism to move the movable contact members so as to make and break contact with the fixed contact member. A grounding strip electrically attached to the movable contact member, positioned so as to come in contact with the chamber wall immediately after the breaking of contact between the fixed and the movable contact members. The movement mechanism comprises a linkage having two links, the first link attached at one end to the movable contact member and the other end connected to the second link, the other end of the second link being connected to a shaft member. The shaft member sealingly extends through the wall of the chamber having attached to it on the outside of the chamber a handle for causing the shaft to rotate. The shaft upon rotation engages the linkage causing the movable contact member to make or break contact with the fixed contact member and respectively the ground strip to move away from or come in contact with the wall of the chamber.

An electrical insulator assembly and method of manufacturing same, having a generally cylindrical or conical body portion formed of a breakable cast solid insulation system and a reinforcing member having a corrugated configuration and formed of a web or mesh type reinforcing fabric. When the breakable body member has been broken, the corrugated configured reinforcing web member provides a path of escape for pressurized insulating fluid while limiting the movement of body member fragments in the direction of escape of the pressurized fluid.

A gas insulated transmission line having radially flexible field control means for reducing the electric field along the periphery of the inner conductor at predetermined locations wherein the support insulators are located. The radially flexible field control means of the invention includes several structural variations of the inner conductor, wherein careful controlling of the length to depth of surface depressions produces regions of reduced electric field. Several embodiments of the invention dispose a flexible connector at the predetermined location along the inner conductor where the surface depressions that control the reduced electric field are located.

An improved compressed-gas puffer-type circuit-interrupter is provided having improved supporting, shielding and assembly features for making ready provision for a separate bench subassembly of the gas-interrupter module, and enabling its ready application to a grounded metallic tank-type of circuit-interrupter, or, alternatively, to gas-insulated transmission-line equipment, as desired. Improved supporting features involve the utilization of a pair of upstanding side-insulating supporting shields, which substantially solely support the upper relatively-stationary contact and shielding assembly, apart from any support needed by the upper terminal-bushing, when used. Additionally, the invention comprises improved rod guiding features for the movable operating cylinder, improved shielding structure on both the stationary and movable contact structures and improved capacitor-tube mounting-assembly arrangements, an improved lower metallic base-support, having a shielding portion, which shields the relatively-sharp-cornered hardware features, such as the movable-contact guiding stem, reducing the electrical gradient, employing tubular shielding structures adjacent the central heavy supporting plate for relieving the electrostatic field, and employing, additionally, an improved upper electrostatic shielding arrangement, easily attached and disassembled by a simplified spring-clip assembly. An additional feature of the invention is the use of a spherical bearing located at the upper end of the insulating pull-rod assembly, or operating-rod assembly to compensate for inaccuracies in manufacture, and improving the general assembly features adapting the modules for bench-assembly inspection.

An improved modular, puffer-type circuit-interrupting unit is provided capable of its own independent support, and adaptable for use, either as a singular modular unit, or when used with a plurality of similar units, constituting a conjointly-acting group of serially related puffer-units suitable for the higher-voltage applications. The modular puffer-unit of the instant invention is capable of independent support, and is adaptable for very simple straight-line actuating movement, for not only causing contact separation, but also a simultaneous compression of the utilized gas to a pressurized state for gas ejection into the established arc for rapid arc extinction thereof. A novel feature of the instant invention is the utilization of a side insulating support baffle plate, which not only provides the desirable independent support for the stationary contact structure of the modular puffer-unit, but, additionally, serves as a baffle plate to prevent the lateral dispersion of the emanated hot arc gases from reaching the side tank wall, and thereby causing voltage flash-over.

An improved, multi-function, stationary-contact-and-voltage-shield structure is provided for a high-voltage gas-puffer-type circuit-interrupter, in which the surrounding metallic shield provides a smooth, low-gradient voltage shape, collecting and cooling the dispersed hot arced gases, generated during the interrupting operation at the arc, by the provision of selectively-located venting cooling port holes provided in the metallic shield structure and also in the stationary contact structure. The arrangement of the enveloped stationary contact and surrounding main stationary contact fingers, together with the outer, encompassing vented metallic shield arrangement is such as to provide an improved highly-efficient single-pressure puffer-type high-voltage circuit-interrupter.

A coupling flex-plate member comprising a circular metallic member having a centrally-disposed annular groove provided therein, providing a generally H-shaped cross-section, is fixedly secured to the confronting ends of adjacent inner high-voltage tubular conductors of a gas-insulated transmission line to permit a limited, but sufficient flexibility, of the inner conductor sections, or conductor buses. A low-strength high-conductivity material is used for the coupling flex-plate member, and permits an axial bending in a spring-like fashion until material yielding occurs. Inaccuracies during fabrication and assembly of the component parts are accommodated by the use of such a coupling flex-plate member without damaging adjacent components, especially spacing insulators, which are, of course, brittle and subject to fracture.
