An industrial truck having a drive portion including wheels being connected to an electric motor being connected to a power source and a trailer portion having wheels. The industrial truck includes a steering system positioned on the drive portion connected to the trailer portion to provide articulated steering of the industrial truck. The industrial truck further including a control device to vary the speed of the motor to vary the speed of the industrial truck.

A low profile ring-shaped motor has a housing, a bearing support attached to the housing and supporting a rotating shaft carrying a ring-shaped rotor. A ring-shaped stator is secured to the housing and is concentric and between the legs of the U-shaped rotor. The stator is formed by a continuous strip of magnetic material wound and laminated in a toroid and having helical windings therearound. On the inside of the legs of the rotor are mounted a plurality of permanent magnets forming the poles of the motor. Radially opposite magnets are of the same polarity. Control of the switching of the current through the windings is by means of Hall Effect devices sensing the change in polarity of a ring shaped magnet means having the same number of poles as does the permanent magnets.

Low profile ring-shaped motor

A dynamoelectric machine having a rotor formed from a continuous strip of ferrous material and a continuous helically formed conductor thereon. The rotor having a rectangular cross section is mounted on the periphery of a web member. The web member is axially mounted for rotation about a frame and supports a fan. The stator of the machine is axially aligned with the outer circumferential surface of the rotor and provides support for pairs of permanent magnets and an equal number of pairs of brushes. The field magnets are positioned to magnetically link with the winding on the rotor. The brushes are equally and angularly spaced in the frame and operative contact with a commutator integrally formed with the rotor winding.

Compact ring shaped brush motor

Lap wound direct-current dynamoelectric machines may allow excessive currents to flow in single turn windings when such machines are operated at relatively low speeds and/or relatively high voltages, and plural turn windings cannot be practically formed from heavy gauge wire, or from heavy gauge rectangular wire or from rectangular wire, to efficiently fill armature slots. A plural turn, preformed winding is disclosed having two ends for connection to commutator segments substantially adjacent each other on the armature, and with at least four sides defining at least two open turns, for engaging slots in the armature core which are spaced substantially 90.degree. apart for a four pole machine. A three open turn winding is also disclosed. The number of open turns is limited only by space available in the armature coil slots.

Method of making a multiple open turn lap wound dynamoelectric machine

A dynamoelectric machine (1), having brushes which contact an armature contact surface such as commutator (6) or slip rings, is provided with a plurality of independent, individually removable brush holders (10, 100). Each brush holder is provided with either a removable pin (102) to allow brushes to contact the armature contact surface after the brush holder (10, 100) has been installed, or with a clamping bolt (40), retaining brushes (8) in a predetermined position for insertion of the brush holder, and removal of the brush holder, the brush holder being tilted or cocked to avoid contact between it and the armature contact surface. Bolting the brush holder (10, 100) into place makes electrical contact between the dynamoelectric machine and the brush holder by means of an insulated, conductive threaded aperture (34) on the exterior service of the machine, a mounting bolt (24) inserted into this aperture (34) urging a conductive portion (20) of the brush holder into electrical contact. The brush holder (10, 100) may be further provided with a rotatable spring support (212) for varying the pressure exerted on the brushes, and a measuring scale (216) for correlating the length of partially worn brush with an angular position of the spring support, to facilitate adjustment of brush pressure as brushes wear. Angular adjustment of the position of the spring support may also serve to lift certain types of brushes into a retracted position. The disclosed brush pressure adjustment structure is also usable with non-removable brush holders.

This invention relates to an improved armature for a four pole wave wound direct current machine and also to a method for winding the armature for such a machine. A plural turn winding is free formed or wound in place to substantially a final shape with two ends spaced for connection to commutator segments spaced substantially 180.degree. apart on the armature and with at least four sides defining at least two open turns. The winding sides are spaced for engaging slots in the armature core which are spaced substantially 90.degree. apart. The winding is initially free formed and the turns are separated as necessary to insert the winding on the core and to position the winding sides in their assigned slots in the armature core.
