A carbon black having a combination of properties with values in ranges selected to promote high conductivity, high hydrophobicity, and reduced outgassing in lead acid batteries while maintaining high charge acceptance and cycleability. The carbon black has a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area ranging from 100 m/g to 1100 m/g combined with one or more properties, e.g., a surface energy (SE) of 10 mJ/mor less, and/or a Raman microcrystalline planar size (L) of at least 22 &#x212b;, e.g., ranging from 22 &#x212b; to 50 &#x212b;. In some cases, the carbon black has a statistical thickness surface area (STSA) of at least 100 m/g, e.g., ranging from 100 m/g to 600 m/g.

Disclosed herein are materials and compositions comprising: an oxidized carbon black having a BET surface area ranging from 50 to 700 m2/g, a DBP oil adsorption number ranging from 50 to 200 mL/100 g, and a primary particle size ranging from 7 to 30 nm; and a polyetheramine comprising ethylene oxide and propylene oxide monomers, wherein the polyetheramine coats the oxidized carbon black. Also disclosed are coatings and coating compositions comprising these materials and methods of making the same.

A method of controlling an in-series, multiple, e.g., two, reaction zone, hydroformylation process for producing normal (N) and iso (I) aldehydes at a N:I ratio, the process comprising contacting an olefinically unsaturated compound with synthesis gas and a catalyst comprising (A) a transition metal, e.g., rhodium, (B) an organobisphosphite ligand, and (C) an organomonophosphite ligand, the contacting conducted in first and subsequent reaction zone(s) and at hydroformylation conditions comprising a transition metal concentration in each zone, the method comprising decreasing the transition metal concentration in the first reaction zone to decrease the N:I ratio or increasing the transition metal concentration in the first reaction zone to increase the N:I ratio.

A method of controlling a hydroformylation process for producing normal (N) and iso (I) aldehydes at a N:I ratio, the process comprising contacting an olefinically unsaturated compound, e.g., propylene, with synthesis gas and a catalyst comprising a transition metal, e.g., rhodium, and an organopolyphosphite and an organomonophosphite ligand, the contacting conducted at hydroformylation conditions comprising a synthesis gas partial pressure, the method comprising increasing the synthesis gas partial pressure in the first reaction zone to decrease the N:I ratio or decreasing the synthesis gas partial pressure in the first reaction zone to increase the N:I ratio.

Controlling the normal:iso aldehyde ratio in a mixed ligand hydroformylation process by controlling the syngas partial pressure

A process of hydrogenating an aliphatic dialdehyde, preferably, a C-Calicyclic dicarboxaldehyde, to form an aliphatic diol, preferably, a C-Calicyclic diol, most preferably, cis/trans-(1,3)(1,4)-cyclohexanedimethanol. The process involves contacting one or more aliphatic dialdehydes in a liquid phase with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst in a hydrogenation zone and in the presence of water in an amount equal to or greater than 10 weight percent, based on the weight of the total liquid feed to the hydrogenation. The alicyclic dicarboxaldehyde is preferably prepared via hydroformylation of an olefin with subsequent extraction of the alicyclic dicarboxaldehyde product from the hydroformylation product fluid.

Hydrogenation of aliphatic dialdehydes to aliphatic diols

MIBC and/or a mixture of IBHK and TMN is produced from MIBK by a process comprising the step of contacting MIBK with hydrogen under condensation/hydrogenation/dehydration reactive conditions and in the presence of a catalytic amount of a Cu-based condensation/hydrogenation/dehydration catalyst. The relative amounts of MIBC and the mixture of IBHK and TMN are controlled by the reaction temperature, a lower temperature, e.g., 130 C., favoring MIBC alone, and a higher temperature, e.g., 200 C., favoring a mixture of MIBC and IBHK plus TMN.

Process for the production of MIBC and /or IBHK plus TMN using copper-based catalysts

An improved method for the manufacture of MIBK and DIBK from DMK and/or IPA, by reacting, in the presence of an aldol condensation catalyst, a gaseous mixture comprising hydrogen and DMK and/or IPA. The improvement is the use of a reaction pressure greater than 207 kPa (30 psig) to increase the ratio of MIBK to DIBK. In addition a method for the manufacture of MIBK and DIBK by reacting, in the presence of an aldol condensation catalyst, a gaseous mixture consisting essentially of DMK and/or IPA and optionally water.
