A method of prioritizing the automated translation of communications includes capturing and inputting into a data processing system a translation-candidate communication rendered in a first human language. A first data set representative of the translation-candidate communication is stored in computer memory and parsed into communication sub-portions. Communication sub-portions are algorithmically selected for translation depending on their relatedness to a predetermined topic as determined by first-language extraction rules. Each selected communication sub-portion is translated to a translated-data-set sub-portion representative of that selected communication sub-portion in the second human language. Translated-data-set sub-portions are subjected to a secondary filtration process in accordance with which their relatedness to the predetermined topic is determined by second-language extraction rules. Translated-data-set sub-portions determined to contain information sufficiently related to the predetermined topic are converted to converted-data-set sub-portions representative of the translated-data-set sub-portions in a human-intelligible format and outputted through a machine-to-human interface.

Provided is a method of reducing postal revenue losses associated with the processing and delivery of international mail pieces. Algorithmically-resolved image data associated with a mail piece is compared to international-mail-services postage data and a determination is rendered, based on the comparison, as to whether any postage indicated as paid is sufficient to further process the mail piece in accordance with the level of delivery service requested. In various aspects, an attempt to algorithmically ascertain the identity of the sender is undertaken for purposes of automated charge assessment relative to a mail piece for which it is determined that insufficient postage has been tendered. In accordance with alternative aspects, if the sender identity cannot be ascertained, the mail piece is variously (i) rejected for manual handling or (ii) routed for automated sortation and delivery in accordance with a 'downgraded' delivery service level for which the amount paid is adequate.

A system and method for receiving and storing data about a unique postal indicium, the data being received from a printing location after printing of the postal indicium and determining whether scanned information about the postal indicium received from a reading location matches the stored data, is a duplicate, or is otherwise suspected of being fraudulent. The method is facilitated in part by maintaining data related to each business reply customer account. The business reply customer data is consulted and compared to a predetermined set of criteria to ascertain if the possibly incomplete, incorrect, or ambiguous data discernable from the captured image of the mail piece is indicative of, at a minimum, that the mail piece is business reply for the purpose of sortation to an appropriate business reply collection point, and in addition, that a high-confidence match to a customer account can be obtained for the purpose of automated charge assessment. The processing of mail pieces relies in part on automated address interpretation of captured address field images to generate sortation signals that control automated mail sorting machinery at outgoing and incoming mail centers. In alternative implementations, a coding depth file (&ldquo;CDF&rdquo;) controls (i) the depth to which a captured address field image is resolved and (ii) a time delay in performing address interpretation. In one aspect, a CDF includes a first set of data associating a depth value with each of a selected plurality of incoming mail centers to which an outgoing mail center sends mail pieces. The depth value controls the depth to which a stored address field image is resolved and corresponds to a level of refinement to which automated sorting machinery at the associated incoming mail center sorts mail pieces. In another aspect, a CDF includes a second set of data associating a deferral time with stored address data, the deferral time representing at least an acceptable maximum length of time before sortation signals are rendered accessible to the automated sorting machinery at the incoming mail center.

Coding depth file and method of postal address processing using a coding depth file

The invention is characterized in certain aspects by data processing architectures and methods of processing a mail piece having a destination address field through outgoing and incoming mail centers. An illustrative method includes receiving a mail piece at an outgoing mail center for transport to an incoming mail center and subsequent sorting and transport from the incoming mail center to an an addressee. The mail piece includes a destination address field that is divided into a first address portion and a second address portion. The first address portion is interpreted at the outgoing mail center and used to sort the mail piece for transport to the incoming mail center. The second address portion is eventually resolved and used by the incoming mail center to sort the mail piece for subsequent delivery to an addressee. Because resolution of the second address portion is not required until the physical mail piece arrives at the incoming mail center, secondary address resolution is delayed in accordance with a set of predetermined time parameters. The second address portion is eventually resolved to generate a set of sorting instructions that are made accessible to the incoming mail center in accordance with the specified time parameters. By assigning a deferral time unique to each mail piece of a selected plurality of mail pieces, secondary address resolution for those mail pieces can be prioritized according to need.

A system for assembling and communicating variable-length data messages over a computer network is adapted to access a master set of predefined data structures and select for inclusion within an assembled message those predefined data structures within the master set meeting a predetermined set of inclusion criteria. A message is assembled to include a set of selected predefined structures and an index including a set of index references. Each index reference corresponds to a data structure within the message and is indicative of the content of the data structure to which it corresponds. An offset reference is associated with each index reference of a selected set of index references included in the index.
