Methods are provided for emissions control of a vehicle. In one example, a catalyst may include a cerium-based support material and a transition metal catalyst loaded on the support material, the transition metal catalyst including nickel and copper, wherein nickel in the transition metal catalyst is included in a monatomic layer loaded on the support material. In some examples, limiting nickel to the monatomic layer may mitigate extensive transition metal catalyst degradation ascribed to sintering of thicker nickel washcoat layers. Further, by utilizing the cerium-based support material, side reactions involving nickel in the transition metal catalyst with other support materials may be prevented.

An automotive catalytic converter includes a three-way catalyst having Rh as the only precious metal configured as a front zone and a three-way catalyst having a mixture of Rh and Pd, Pt, or both configured as a rear zone, such that an exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine passes through the front zone before passing through the rear zone to minimize sulfur poisoning of the catalytic converter.

A fuel cell system includes a stack of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells defining a body, the body including a coolant inlet and coolant outlet, a cathode inlet and cathode outlet corresponding to a cathode, an anode inlet and an anode outlet corresponding to an anode. The fuel cell system also includes a cathode humidifier fluidly connected to the cathode inlet to provide a humidified inlet stream to the cathode inlet, an oxygen sensor positioned upstream of the cathode inlet and downstream of the cathode humidifier, and configured to measure oxygen content of the humidified inlet stream, and a controller connected to the cathode humidifier and the oxygen sensor and configured to operate the cathode humidifier based on the oxygen content of the humidified inlet stream.

Methods and systems are provided for emissions control of a vehicle. A hydrocarbon and NOx catalyst trap includes a three-way catalyst, and a zeolite layer adjacent to the three-way catalyst and including alumina and silica arranged to form a repeating skeletal frame that defines cavities including active metal active sites for hydrocarbon and NOx trapping such that individual atoms of the active metal are bound to the frame within the cavities via oxygen atoms.

A catalytic converter includes a hydrocarbon catalyst trap including BEA zeolite configured to adsorb iso-octane at ambient temperatures and desorb iso-octane at temperatures between 150&#xb0; C. and 170&#xb0; C., and active metal supercage impregnated USY zeolite configured to adsorb and coke iso-octane at temperatures greater than 150&#xb0; C.

Catalyst trap

A hydrocarbon trap catalyst and method of forming the same are disclosed. The method may include introducing copper into a zeolite at 10% to 75% of an ion-exchange level of the zeolite, introducing at least one of nickel and manganese into a zeolite at 50% to 100% total of an ion-exchange level of the zeolite, and applying a three-way catalyst layer. The copper and nickel and/or manganese may be introduced into a single zeolite or the copper may be introduced into a first zeolite layer and the nickel and/or manganese may be introduced into a second zeolite layer. If copper and another metal are introduced into the same zeolite, copper may be introduced first. The disclosed trap catalyst may increase the release temperature of hydrocarbons such as ethanol, propylene and toluene, and thus reduce vehicle cold start tailpipe emissions.

Phosphorus tolerant or resistant three-way catalysts (TWC) are disclosed. The TWC may include a substrate defining a plurality of channels. It may include front and rear washcoat portions overlying the substrate and having respective first and second washcoat loadings, the first washcoat loading being at most 2.0 g/inand less than the second washcoat loading. The front washcoat portion may include a catalyst material supported on a support material comprising a cerium oxide, such as ceria or CZO, or a pre-phosphated material, such as AlPO, or CePO. In one embodiment, the support material may comprise at least 85 wt. % of a cerium oxide or at least 85 wt. % of a phosphate-containing material. The front portion and the underlying substrate may comprise from 3 to 25 vol. % of the three-way catalyst or the front portion may overly up to an initial 15% of an axial length of the substrate.

A system for filtering and oxidizing particulate matter produced by a gasoline direct injection engine is disclosed. In one embodiment, engine cylinder air-fuel is adjusted to allow soot to oxidize at an upstream particulate filter while exhaust gases are efficiently processed in a downstream catalyst.

Various methods are provided for operating an emission control device. In one example, a method for an emission control device including a catalyst and a filter comprises passively regenerating the filter, and adjusting, via a controller, a duration of active regeneration of the filter based on an oxygen storage capacity of the emission control device.

A three-way catalyst including a mixture of nickel and copper is provided for reducing carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon emissions, and nitrogen oxides from vehicle engine exhausts. The catalyst is impregnated onto a carrier substrate which is non-reactive with nickel and copper. When used in a vehicle exhaust gas treatment system, the nickel-copper catalyst provides improved efficiency in reducing CO, HC, and NOemissions over the use of conventional three-way-catalysts and provides enhanced oxygen storage capacity (OSC) and water-gas-shift (WGS) functions.

Fuel control for spark ignited engine having a particulate filter system

A method is provided for monitoring an emission device coupled to an engine. In one example approach, the method comprises: following a deceleration fuel shut-off duration, indicating degradation of the emission device based on an amount of rich products required to cause a sensor to become richer than a threshold. The amount of rich products required may be correlated to an amount of oxygen stored in the emission device. The indication of emission device degradation may be further based on air mass and temperature during delivery of the required rich products.

A reverse flow hydrocarbon trap is provided that improves the conversion of hydrocarbons present in the exhaust gases of a vehicle to more environmentally benign compounds during cold engine starts. The trap includes a substrate having at least one exhaust gas passage therethrough, with the walls of the exhaust gas passage including a hydrocarbon trapping material and an oxidative catalyst. The substrate includes an inlet for hot exhaust gas from a vehicle engine and an outlet for the exhaust gas and further includes an inlet channel, an outlet channel, and an intermediate channel through which exhaust gas flows. The intermediate channel is oriented such that the flow of exhaust gas through the exhaust gas passage is reversed from the direction of flow in the inlet and outlet channels to improve the performance of the hydrocarbon trap.
