A dispensing system, a flexible bag or pouch for use therewith, and methods for filling a dispensing bottle with a flowable product and dispensing the same are disclosed. The system includes a flexible bag and a dispensing bottle. The flowable product is located in the bag. The bag includes a first end and a second end. The bottle includes an interior chamber, a squeezable sidewall surrounding the chamber and a bottom cap including a dispensing valve. The bag is disposed in the chamber with the second end opened to form an open mouth, whereupon the flowable product is in communication with the dispensing valve. Squeezing of the bottle's sidewall applies pressure to the flowable product to cause it to be dispensed out of the bottle through dispensing valve.

Dispensing system for dispensing flowable materials, flexible bag or pouch for use in dispensing system, and methods of filling dispensing bottles and dispensing flowable materials therefrom

A package including a fitment for dispensing a liquid from a flexible bag is disclosed. The fitment is secured to the bag and includes a compressible bulb and a piercing member that are coupled together. In two embodiments the fitment is configured so that the piercing member pierces through a wall of the bag to dispense the bag's contents through an outlet port of the fitment. One of those embodiments includes a separate valve to open and close the outlet port. Another embodiment does not include a separate valve to open and close the outlet port. A third embodiment makes use of a fitment connected to a filling gland of the bag and which is in communication with the interior of the bag. That third embodiment includes a frangible seal forming part of the fitment and which is pierced by the piercing member to dispense the liquid from the bag.

A flexible package and methods of making the same are disclosed. The package is formed of a flexible sheet material and includes plural panels connected together to form an internal compartment holding a flowable granular or particulate material. The package includes a transverse seal line which includes a permanently sealed section and a releasably securable sealed section. The releasably securable sealed section is configured to be peeled open to form a spout for the package. The package also includes a re-closable connector located adjacent the releasably securable section to close the spout after it has been opened. The package also includes a handle for lifting and carrying the package and for facilitating pouring the contents of the package out of the spout.

Vacuum package with reclosable pour spout and handle, and methods of making the same

A flexible side-gusseted package and methods of making the same are disclosed. The package has a central longitudinal axis, a front panel, a back panel, and a pair of gusseted side panels. The front panel is secured to the gusseted side panels along a pair of side seal lines. The back panel is secured to the gusseted side panels along a pair of side seal lines. Each of the seal lines includes a pair of end portions and an intermediate portion. The intermediate portion, e.g., a concave recessed portion, of each side seal line is located closer to the central longitudinal axis than the end portions of the side seal lines to provide a package which is somewhat necked-down at its middle, to facilitate grasping of the package by users.

Methods of making gusseted flexible package with shaped sides

A package including a fitment for dispensing a liquid from a flexible bag is disclosed. The fitment is secured to the bag and includes a compressible bulb and a piercing member that are coupled together. The fitment is configured such that when the bulb is first actuated, e.g., pressed, it causes the piercing member to pierce through the wall of the bag so that the contents of the bag can be dispensed through an outlet port of the fitment. In one embodiment of the fitment a portion of the piercing member is permanently located within the bag after first use and a valve is provided to open and close the outlet port thereafter. In another and more preferred embodiment the piercing member is extended into and out of the bag to dispense the contents of the bag through the outlet port, without necessitating use of a separate valve to open and close that port.

Pierce at first use fluid dispensing valve and flexible package including the same

Disclosed are apparatus and methods for producing bags filled with a flowable particulate material from a continuous tube of flexible material. The apparatus includes a one-way valve application station having a valve applicator mechanism and a cutting and heating mechanism configured for movement with the bag through the apparatus. The valve applicator mechanism holds a one-way valve for insertion within the bag as the bag is moved through the apparatus. The cutting and heating mechanism is configured to be moved in unison with the valve applicator mechanism to cooperate with it to cut a vent hole in the bag at the valve and to weld the valve to the bag. Then the valve applicator mechanism and the cutting and heating mechanism are moved to apply another one-way valve to another filled bag and the bag with the valve secured thereto is sealed. The resulting sealed bag is suitable for stable palletization.

Form, fill and seal apparatus and methods for applying one-way valves to flexible packages

Disclosed is a single brew beverage cartridge for use in a brewing apparatus. The cartridge includes a lid and a cup shaped filter suspended below the lid and in which a beverage brewing ingredient is held. The lid includes an annular collar to prevent the lid from deforming when a needle of the brewing apparatus pierces it during the brewing process. Preferably the cartridge is formed of materials, e.g., paper/paperboard, so that it is compostable and biodegradable.

Single brew beverage cartridge system including same and method of use

Disclosed is a single brew beverage cartridge for use in a brewing apparatus. The cartridge includes a lid and a cup shaped filter suspended below the lid and in which a beverage brewing ingredient is held. The lid includes an annular collar to prevent the lid from deforming when a needle of the brewing apparatus pierces it during the brewing process. Preferably the cartridge is formed of materials so that it is compostable and biodegradable.

A one-way valve and a flexible package including the valve are disclosed. The valve basically comprises a base member, a flexible septum and a stake. The base member is mounted on a wall of the package and includes a valve seat and at least one inlet port. The septum is formed of a resilient material and is connected to the base member by the stake, with a first portion of the septum contiguous with the stake fixed in position with respect to the base member and a second portion of the septum engaging the valve seat and covering and sealing the at least one inlet port. The septum is arranged to flex off of the valve seat to unseal the at least one inlet port when the pressure of gas at the at least one inlet port reaches a threshold.

One-way valve for flexible package and package including a one-way valve

A package fabricated from a flexible sheet material capable of being sealed for closing off the interior of the package from ambient atmosphere is disclosed. The package has two or more side walls and a like number of side seams. The package has an open upper end portion terminating in a free edge. The inner surface of the side walls has a releasably securable adhesive adjacent the upper end portion in a pattern wherein the adhesive does not extend into the area of the side seams, thus increasing the structural integrity of the package.

Flexible package with sealed edges and easy to open mouth

A packaging film or sheet which is capable of forming peel seals having acceptable seal strengths, is disclosed which includes a polymer mixture consisting of a blend having proportionate amounts of from about 60 percent by weight to about 70 percent by weight of LDPE; from about 15 percent by weight to about 25 percent by weight of mLLDPE; and from about 10 percent by weight to about 20 percent by weight of 1-polybutylene.

A convertible package having an interior for holding a flowable product, e.g., a powder or granular material. The package includes at a front panel, a rear panel, and a removable covering. The front and rear panels are formed of a flexible sheets having a peripheral edge along which the panels are heat sealed to form the package's hollow interior. The removable cover is made up of a front cover sheet and a rear cover sheet, which are formed of a flexible material and are of a sufficient extent to encompass the entire area of the front panel and rear panels, respectively. The cover sheets are releasably secured along their periphery to respective ones of the packages front and rear panels to effectively isolate those panels from the ambient surroundings. The two cover sheets are arranged to be peeled off the panels, leaving the front and rear panels secured together with the product sealed within the hollow interior of the package.

Flexible package with peel-away covering

A snap closure for a flexible, gusseted package and a flexible gusseted packing including the closure. The package includes a mouth portion arranged to be opened to provide access to the contents of the package. The package is formed of a flexible material and includes a front panel, a rear panel, and a pair of opposed side gussets. The panels and gussets each include a top portion, which between them define the package's mouth. The package's mouth is initially sealed but arranged to be opened, e.g., peeled apart. The snap closure enables the resealing of the mouth of the package and is made up of a pair of elongated elements, one of which includes a tongue extending along the length of it. The other element includes an undercut groove extending along the length of it. The elements are arranged to be pressed together, whereupon the tongue of the one element enters the groove of the other element with portions of the panels and side gussets tightly interposed therebetween. The closure elements may be a part of the package or a separate component for use therewith. In any case when the closure is utilized it recloses the mouth of the package to preclude or minimize the ingress of air into the package.
