In a method for operating a urea dosing system in an exhaust aftertreatment system (EATS) of an engine, an ambient temperature is measured in an environment in which the EATS is disposed, one or more temperatures associated with the EATS to which there is a relationship to a temperature of area in the urea dosing system are monitored. After turning off the engine, whether urea in the urea dosing system is subject to freezing is determined based on the measured ambient temperature and the one or more monitored temperatures. A reversion operation is performed after turning off the engine with a delay until one or more events occur, the one or more events including determining that urea in the urea dosing system is subject to freezing. An engine system is also provided.

An engine arrangement includes an engine (), an exhaust line () connected downstream of the engine, exhaust after treatment equipment () in the exhaust line, a temperature sensor (-) for sensing a temperature of the exhaust after treatment equipment, and a turbo compound arrangement () including a turbo compound turbine () in the exhaust line. Exhaust flow through the turbo compound arrangement and the exhaust line is modified in response to one or more temperature sensor signals to increase heating of the exhaust after treatment equipment.

Engine arrangement and method for heating exhaust after treatment equipment in an exhaust after treatment system

A turbo-charged internal combustion cylinder assembly includes a combustion chamber which may be communicably connected to a compressor via an intake port through an intake manifold and aftercooler so the compressor may provide pre-combustion gases to the combustion chamber when the intake valve is open. An exhaust port communicably connects the combustion chamber to an exhaust manifold. An exhaust valve may open to exhaust post-combustion gases to the exhaust manifold while an intake valve is substantially closed, and the exhaust valve may open to admit post-combustion gases to the combustion chamber while the intake valve is substantially open and an exhaust port pressure in the exhaust port is higher than a combustion chamber pressure in the combustion chamber. A fuel injector may admit fuel to the combustion chamber. A spill valve may control a rate of fuel injection to the combustion chamber, the spill valve having a first position providing a maximum fuel injection rate, a second position providing a substantially zero fuel injection rate, and at least one intermediate position providing an intermediate fuel injection rate between the maximum fuel injection rate and the zero fuel injection rate.

Turbo-charged internal combustion engine with in-cylinder EGR and injection rate shaping

A system for accomplishing engine exhaust braking and exhaust gas recirculation for an engine having an exhaust manifold and a plurality of exhaust valves per cylinder during a four stroke engine cycle is provided. The system includes an actuation device operable to provide valve actuation of a single exhaust valve for an exhaust braking event and an exhaust gas recirculation event. The exhaust valve is not completely closed during the exhaust braking event and the exhaust gas recirculation event. The exhaust braking event includes actuating a single exhaust valve beginning during a second half of a compression stroke and a first half of an expansion stroke, and closing the exhaust valve beginning during a second half of an exhaust stroke. The exhaust gas recirculation event includes reactuating the exhaust valve beginning during a first half of an intake stroke, and closings the exhaust valve beginning during a second half of the intake stroke. Since a single exhaust valve is actuated during the exhaust braking and exhaust gas recirculation events, the overall performance of the vehicle is increased.

Method and apparatus for combining exhaust gas recirculation and engine exhaust braking using single valve actuation

A turbo-charged internal combustion cylinder assembly includes a combustion chamber, an intake port communicably connected with an intake manifold, and an exhaust port communicably connected with an exhaust manifold. An intake valve is disposed within the intake port, and an exhaust valve is disposed within the exhaust port, the valves facilitating, in an open position, or restricting, in a closed position, gas flow between their respective ports and the combustion chamber. A compressor may be communicably connected to the intake manifold so as to provide pre-combustion gases to, and regulate pressure of the combustion chamber. The exhaust valve may open while the intake valve is closed to exhaust post-combustion gases from the combustion chamber. Alternatively, the exhaust valve may open while the intake valve is open to admit post-combustion gases into the combustion chamber if the combustion chamber pressure is lower than the exhaust port pressure.

An engine exhaust braking method and apparatus bypasses intake air around the intercooler from the turbocharger while simultaneously injecting a minimum amount or greater of fuel per stroke into an engine cylinder during engine brake operation. The minimum amount of fuel is determined such that it is the smallest amount of fuel which will fully combust when the engine is operating at a particular speed. The apparatus includes a combustion engine, a turbocharger, an intercooler, and a compression release braking system. The compression release braking system includes an engine or vehicle electronic control unit, a compression release brake controller, a fuel injector, and an intercooler bypass assembly, wherein while the engine brake is engaged, a small amount of fuel is injected into the cylinders during the compression stroke, and engine intake air is bypassed around the intercooler from the turbocharger and directly into the engine.

Method and apparatus for compression brake enhancement using fuel and an intercooler bypass

A two-cycle compression brake apparatus and braking method is provided according to the invention. The apparatus includes a positive power hydraulic lash adjuster positioned in a travel path of a power rocker arm and being capable of opening an associated at least one valve when a hydraulic fluid is held in the positive power hydraulic lash adjuster, and a compression brake hydraulic lash adjuster positioned on a compression brake rocker arm and positioned over the associated at least one engine valve and being capable of opening the associated at least one valve when a hydraulic fluid is held in the compression brake hydraulic lash adjuster, wherein in a compression braking mode the hydraulic fluid is held in the compression brake hydraulic lash adjuster to actuate the at least one associated valve while the positive power hydraulic lash adjuster does not actuate the at least one associated valve so that at least one exhaust valve is opened near a top dead center position of an associated piston while at least one intake valve is opened near a bottom dead center position of the associated piston to perform the two-cycle engine compression braking.

Two-cycle compression braking on a four stroke engine using hydraulic lash adjustment

An engine exhaust braking method and apparatus. The method includes injecting a predetermined amount of fuel per stroke into an engine cylinder during engine braking, wherein the predetermined amount of fuel cools the fuel injector nozzle, thereby allowing the engine braking to be performed without damage to the fuel injector nozzle due to excessive heat. The apparatus includes a fuel injector having a nozzle and capable of injecting a predetermined amount of fuel into an engine, and a processor connected to the fuel injector, with the processor monitoring engine operation and capable of causing the fuel injector to inject the predetermined amount of fuel into the engine, wherein a predetermined amount of fuel is injected into the engine to cool the fuel injector nozzle, thereby allowing the exhaust braking to be performed without damaging the fuel injector nozzle due to excessive heat.

Method and apparatus for controlling nozzle temperature during engine braking

An engine exhaust braking method and apparatus is provided according to the invention. The engine exhaust braking method includes the steps of actuating an exhaust valve during an intake stroke of the engine, holding the exhaust valve open during a first portion of a compression stroke of the engine, and closing the exhaust valve when a corresponding piston of the engine is more than one-half way through a compression stroke, wherein a cylinder corresponding to the exhaust valve is precharged by higher pressure air from the exhaust manifold.
