The circulation of exhaust gas within a heating vessel is controlled to reduce the adverse effects of the abrasive and corrosive exhaust gas on exposed interior surfaces of the vessel. The firing rates of the burners in the vessel may be varied to alter the flow patterns within the vessel. Additional jet burners with high exhaust gas velocity may be used to direct their exhaust flow in a direction opposing the exhaust flow of other selected burners. Burners may also be angled so as to reduce the flow component of the exhaust gas that may pass over the exposed interior surfaces of the vessel.

Glass melting in a rotary melter

In a float glass process, traction of an attenuating device on the glass ribbon is enhanced by a freely rotating member forced against the underside of the ribbon. The member is preferably a carbon cylinder, and the force is regulated from outside the forming chamber.

Edge gripping means for attenuating float glass

An edge roll apparatus for engaging the marginal edge portion of a hot ribbon of glass, including a body portion and circumferentially positioned teeth. The teeth are shaped to establish at least a 90.degree. angle between the surface of the glass and the leading and outwardly directed edges of the teeth during at least one half of a tooth's engagement path to improve gripping ability.

Apparatus and method for attenuating glass ribbon

A burner tip for passing fuel into a glass melting chamber having a fuel passageway and discrete cooling fluid passageways therein for cooling and shielding the burner tip from attack by a hostile gaseous chamber environment. A ceramic collar member is provided for minimizing inspirated air and cooling fluid may be passed through the burner tip during both the firing cycle and off-firing cycle. The burner tip is provided with small diameter cooling fluid passageways to establish a low volume, high velocity flow of cooling fluid sufficient to shield the burner tip from sting-out attack.

Fluid shielded burner tip for use with a glass melting furnace

An apparatus for sealing between edge control machines and forming chamber sidewalls is disclosed. The invention comprises collar means mounted surrounding the barrel of the edge control machine, alignment means fastened to the edge control machine for maintaining the collar aligned with the barrel of the edge control machine, and a flexible sleeve between the collar and the forming chamber sidewall.
