A method of creating a tissue thickness compensator is disclosed. The method comprises dispensing oxidized regenerated cellulose onto a cover sheet, folding the cover sheet to at least partially capture the oxidized regenerated cellulose therein, and creating the tissue thickness compensator by applying a seal to the folded cover sheet.

Layer of material for a surgical end effector

The present invention is directed to a surgical instrument with a robotics system, a memory device and an end effector having an elongate channel, knife position sensor(s) and a firing bar coupled to a knife. In response to drive motions initiated by the robotics system, the firing bar may translate within the elongate channel. As the firing bar translates, the sensor(s) transmit a signal to the memory device. The position of the knife may be determined from the output signals and may be communicated to the robotics system or instrument user. The sensors may be Hall Effect sensors.

An apparatus includes a proximal structure configured to be positioned extracorporeally relative to a patient, and a distal structure extending distally from the proximal structure and configured to be passed through a body wall and into a body cavity of the patient. The distal structure cooperates with the primary structure to define a primary axis and a working channel sized and configured to receive and guide a surgical scope shaft distally therethrough along the primary axis. The proximal structure has a greater maximum dimension in a direction transverse to the primary axis than the distal structure. The apparatus further includes an articulation feature at a distal end of the distal structure that is configured to articulate relative to the proximal structure to direct the surgical scope shaft along a secondary axis that is angled relative to the primary axis.

The end effector comprises a first jaw, a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw to grasp tissue therebetween, and a staple cartridge. The staple cartridge comprises staples deployable into the tissue. The end effector further comprises a magnetic sensor configured to measure a parameter indicative of an identifying characteristic of the staple cartridge, an impedance sensor configured to measure a parameter indicative of an impedance of the tissue, and a processing unit in communication with the impedance sensor. The processing unit is configured to determine a property of the tissue based on an output of the impedance sensor.

A system and method for controlling an emitter assembly for visualizing a surgical site is disclosed. The emitter assembly is configured to emit a pulse pattern of electromagnetic radiation at the surgical site. The electromagnetic radiation pattern can include infrared radiation, visible light, or combinations thereof in either structured or non-structured formats. Further, a receiver assembly is configured to receive the electromagnetic radiation reflected from the surgical site. The control circuit can be configured to control the sequence or pattern in which the electromagnetic radiation is pulsed according to a preset sequence or according to feedback from the surgical site.

In various embodiments, a surgical stapling instrument can include a handle, a shaft extending from the handle, wherein the shaft defines an axis, and a disposable loading unit which is assembled to the shaft in a direction which is transverse to the shaft axis. Such a connection between the disposable loading unit and the shaft can prevent, or at least inhibit, the disposable loading unit from being unintentionally displaced proximally and/or distally relative to the shaft of the surgical instrument.
