A submarine antenna assembly comprises a tubular body having a removable end cap, a mast stowable in the body and extendible therefrom and having elements mounted thereon, a penetrator stowable in the body and movable therefrom by the mast upon removal of the end cap, the penetrator being adapted to bore through an ice layer, and an inflatable ring stowable in the body and movable therefrom by the mast upon the removal of the end cap. First and second capsules are in the body for retaining and releasing gas, the first capsule being adapted upon opening thereof to pressurize the body to blow off the end cap to permit movement of the mast, the ring, and penetrator out of body, and the second capsule being adapted to inflate the ring to hold the penetrator in engagement with an undersurface of the ice layer. An electronics assembly is disposed in the body and includes message retention and transmitting means in communication with the mast, and timer means in communication with the capsules. A spool is mounted in the mast and a tether is wound on the spool and is fixed at a first end to the spool and at a second end to the body. A clutch is engageable with the spool to stop rotation of the spool, whereby to stop paying out of the tether from the spool, the clutch means being activated by the penetrator breaking through the layer of ice.

Submarine antenna assembly for deployment through ice layer

A device for producing a small (approx. 1' diameter) penetration through quickly. The device is a penetrator having a conical shape. The penetrator includes a ceramic cone having spiral grooves that house a high resistance wire. The wire supplies heat upon being energized. A high thermal dielectric and a metallic shroud are placed over the cone and wire to provide uniform heating to the surrounding area and to prevent short-circuiting of the device.

Ice penetrating hot point

A gas propelled line deployment system includes a launch tube, and a bullshaped projectile. The launch tube has a closed end with a gas port formed therein and an open end having a plurality of radially extending threaded apertures. The projectile has two spaced, circumferential grooves adjacent the blunt end thereof, with an O-ring mounted in one of the grooves. The projectile is slidably received in the launch tube with the blunt end adjacent the open end of the tube, i.e. the rounded end facing the close end, so that O-ring forms a gas tight seal adjacent the open tube end. Nylon retainer screws are threadedly received in the threaded apertures so that they engage within the other circumferential groove in the projectile. The line to be deployed is attached to an elastic band which is attached to the blunt end of the projectile. A carbon dioxide gas canister communicates with the gas port to introduce a pressurized gas flow into the tube. The gas entering the launch tube builds up a propulsion force which is operative for shearing the nylon retainer screws and propelling the projectile outwardly from the launch tube, deploying the line.

Gas-propelled line deployment system

A gas-propelled line deployment device is operable for orthogonally deplog two antenna lines to a distance of greater than one hundred feet. The device includes first, second and third tubes, closed at one end and open at one end, the first and second tubes being arranged perpendicular to each other and the third tube being arranged along the resulting vector of the axes of the perpendicular tubes. The first and second tubes have wire-carrying projectiles received therein and the third tube has a recoil piston received therein, said projectiles and piston making a gas tight seal with their respective tube. The recoil piston has a larger cross-sectional area than each of the first and second wire-carrying projectiles. The device further includes a retainer mechanism which is operable for retaining the wire-carrying projectiles and the recoil piston within their respective tubes until a predetermined gas pressure is achieved. The retainer mechanism is further operable for automatically, and simultaneously releasing the wire-carrying projectiles and the recoil piston when the predetermined gas pressure is achieved within the closed ended tubes. When the wire-carrying projectiles are launched, the recoil piston produces an equal and opposite reaction force to the wire-carrying projectiles so that the device is essentially recoilless.

Orthogonal line deployment device

A deployable antenna assembly includes a canister providing an elongated chamber and an elongated hollow mast with a mounting member on its upper end. A coaxial cable extends into the hollow mast to provide radio signals to the antenna assembly and four antenna members of resiliently deflectable wire spaced at 90 degrees intervals about the periphery of the mounting plate comprise a generally helical coil and elongate arms extending downwardly along the inner wall of the canister, and each opposed pair comprises a dipoles. A pair of baluns are connected to the coaxial cable and disposed adjacent the mounting member, and a phase shifter are connected between the coaxial cable and one of the baluns. Connectors conductively connect the central conductor of the balun to the coil of one of the antenna members of a dipole, and the conductive shield to the coil of the other antenna member of a dipole. A sealing medium is provided about the baluns, and phase shifter. The coils of the antenna members are flexed when the arms are the downwardly extending position within the canister, and the canister is slidable relative to the mast and antenna members to free the arms therefrom for extension into a horizontal position.
