The invention relates to coatings for leather. In particular it relates to top coats for leather. It provides a leather coating composition comprising an organic synthetic resin in aqueous dispersion and an organopolysiloxane, characterized in that the organopolysiloxane is present in aqueous emulsion and comprises a silicone resin having an empirical formula: (I) where &#x2022;R is a monovalent organic group having 1-30 carbon atoms, &#x2022;Z is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms, &#x2022;x has a value from 0.75 to 1.7, and &#x2022;y has a value from 0.1 to 2.0, and having a viscosity of from 1 to 4000 mPa&#xb7;s at 25&#xb0; C. We have found that the use of a silicone resin according to the invention greatly increases the abrasion resistance, as measured by the Taber method, of leather coated with the coating composition. 

Coating compositions

A process is disclosed for making an aqueous emulsion of a silicone polyether having a viscosity greater than 10 kPa-s at 25 QC by combining; an SiH terminated silicone polyether copolymer having an HLB of less than 7, an organopolysiloxane having terminal unsaturated groups, a hydrosilylation catalyst, and an emulsifier to form an oil phase, and then admixing water to the oil phase to form an emulsion.

Emulsions of high viscosity silicone polyethers

Aqueous emulsions of a silicone resin are disclosed that provide a solid silicone resineous coating upon removing water from a film of the emulsion. The silicone resin emulsions are useful for treating various substrates for imparting water resistance/repellence and improving wear/weather protective properties. In particular, they are useful for rendering mineral-based building materials water-resistant, and also as binders in paints.
