A fuel injector for a gas turbine engine of an aircraft having a fuel nozzle including a fuel swirler and/or an outer air swirler. The fuel swirler may include a manifold for receiving fuel from a fuel conduit, and a plurality of fuel passages to direct fuel from the manifold to discharge orifices that direct fuel with swirling flow. The fuel swirler may be configured to provide uniform spray while minimizing recirculation zones; reduce residence time as fuel enters the manifold; minimize flow disruptions, boundary layer growth, and/or pressure drop as fuel flows through the fuel passages; reduces coking internally of the nozzle; reduces thermal stresses; and is simple and low-cost to manufacture. The outer air swirler may include first and second outer air swirler portions with respective vanes and air passages that provide swirling air flow. The outer air swirler may be configured to improve atomization and spray uniformity with a wide spray angle; and minimize flow disruptions for enhancing flow performance.

A fuel injector for a gas turbine engine of an aircraft having a fuel nozzle including a fuel swirler and/or an outer air swirler. The fuel swirler may include a manifold for receiving fuel from a fuel conduit, and a plurality of fuel passages to direct fuel from the manifold to discharge orifices that direct fuel with swirling flow. The fuel swirler may be configured to provide uniform spray while minimizing recirculation zones; reduce residence time as fuel enters the manifold; minimize flow disruptions, boundary layer growth, and/or pressure drop as fuel flows through the fuel passages; reduces coking internally of the nozzle; reduces thermal stresses; and is simple and low-cost to manufacture.

A nozzle tip assembly and method characterized by the use of a retention device including at least one tab that cooperates with a ledge for coupling a nozzle shroud to a nozzle adaptor. The retention device can be used as a secondary retention feature to prevent nozzle separation and/or to enable the fuel injector to be repaired without having to replace the entire assembly. The latter advantage is of particular benefit when there is damage during assembly or when the nozzle tip assembly is being overhauled.

Fuel injector assemblies with frictionally damped fuel supply members, including fuel feed strips. More particularly, the invention provides friction dampers and/or assemblies that frictionally damp movement of fuel supply members in at least one direction. Some of the embodiments provide a friction damper that is easily serviceable, and can be installed after final assembly of a fuel injector. Aspects of the invention are applicable to other components of fuel injectors and gas turbine engines in addition to fuel supply members.

Fuel injector assemblies with frictionally damped fuel supply members, including fuel feed strips. More particularly, the invention provides friction dampers and/or assemblies that frictionally damp movement of fuel supply members in at least one direction as a function of frequency. Accordingly, low frequency vibration can be undamped, while vibration above a prescribed frequency can be damped. Some of the embodiments provide a friction damper that is easily serviceable, and can be installed after final assembly of a fuel injector. Aspects of the invention are applicable to other components of fuel injectors and gas turbine engines in addition to fuel supply members.

A method for increasing and/or suppressing a natural frequency of a fuel injector feed strip while increasing in the axial direction the flexibility of the feed strip, without the use of additional structure or damping devices. More particularly, and by way of example, the present invention provides a fuel feed strip that is shaped in a shape corresponding to a first vibration mode (e.g., a bow shape) of a fuel feed strip of a desired shape (e.g., a straight fuel feed strip). By forming the fuel feed strip in a shape corresponding to a first vibration mode of the fuel feed strip of a desired shape, a vibration mode of the fuel feed strip is suppressed while the axial flexibility of the fuel feed strip is increased.

In a fuel injector assembly, for an internal combustion engine, a curved outer housing, fixed at one end, fully encloses a curved flexible fuel feed member, affixed to the housing inlet end and has a nozzle assembly operatively connected to an inner end, wherein the improvement comprises that the housing inlet includes at least one first shaped surface portion, and the nozzle assembly includes a movable nozzle spray-tip having another shaped surface portion that mates conformingly with and is in contact with the at least one shaped surface portion, resulting in relative motion therebetween upon operation of this engine, as a result of the thermal differential arising due to the differing temperatures of the housing and feed member.

In a fuel injector circuit for a gas turbine engine, a fuel staging valve assembly for distributing fuel into multiple zones in the combustor, the staging valve assembly, including a pilot valve operatively interconnected with at least one main valve, having high pressure and no leak capabilities, which are used to open, close and modulate the mass flow rate volume of fuel within the fuel injection circuit, with the position of the normally-closed valve being controlled by the pressure difference between the nozzle fuel supply circuit and a separately supplied signal circuit. As long as the desired pressure differential is maintained, fuel flow may be modulated without affecting the position of the valve, with the valve seats and valve seals being so configured as to prevent fuel leakage into the downstream nozzle circuit under these conditions.

A fuel injector assembly for dispensing fuel in the combustion chamber of a gas turbine engine, includes in one embodiment an elongated, multi-layered, convoluted nozzle feed strip having an internal passage for directing fuel through the length of the strip from the inlet end to an outlet end; and a cylindrical, multi-layered fuel dispensing nozzle unitary with the feed strip and fluidly connected to the outlet end of the feed strip for dispensing the fuel. The multi-layered feed strip and nozzle allow complex porting of fuel circuits through the injector. The internal fluid passages through the feed strip and nozzle are formed by etching. In another embodiment, the feed strip can be used for directing fuel from the manifold to one or more fuel injectors.
